About the Company

We are a leading, long-established independent supplier of high-quality bulk materials and aggregates operating across the UK. With a strong heritage, a commitment to sustainability, and an extensive premier fleet of heavy goods vehicles (including specialized tankers and tippers), we ensure reliable nationwide distribution.

To support our continued growth and ensure our fleet operations remain efficient, compliant, and performing at their peak, we are seeking a commercially astute, forward-thinking HGV Workshop Manager to lead our internal maintenance operation.

The Role

This is a fantastic autonomous opportunity for a strong, proactive leader to put their own stamp on the business. You will effectively run our internal workshop operation as though it were an independent, profitable HGV workshop business.

The ideal candidate will combine top-tier leadership experience with strong commercial acumen, taking full financial responsibility for the operation. You must be highly focused on health and safety, with an uncompromised commitment to HGV workshop legislation, compliance, and industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead, motivate, and develop the workshop technician team to maximize daily performance, drive accountability, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Operational Excellence: Manage workshop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), minimize fleet downtime, and implement continuous improvement initiatives across all maintenance activities.
  • Financial & Commercial Management: Take full P&L accountability for the workshop. Manage budgets, identify cost-saving measures, and maximize operational efficiencies across our own fleet operations.
  • Supplier & Value Management: Routinely audit external parts suppliers and service providers to negotiate contracts and ensure optimal value for money.
  • Compliance & Safety: Maintain absolute compliance with all HGV workshop legislation, DVSA regulations, and Operator License requirements. Ensure the workshop strictly adheres to rigorous health and safety standards.
  • Growth & Opportunity: Actively identify new business and commercial opportunities to further optimize workshop output and capability.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience Required

  • Proven Leadership: Strong leadership background with a proven track record of managing engineering/technician teams, setting clear targets, and delivering against tight deadlines.
  • Commercial Mindset: Commercially astute with previous experience in budget management, cost-benefit analysis, and driving financial efficiencies within a fleet or commercial vehicle environment.
  • Compliance Expertise: Deep, up-to-date knowledge of HGV vehicle legislation, workshop compliance, and DVSA best practices (holding a Transport Manager CPC or recognized engineering qualification like IRTEC, IMI, or City & Guilds is highly desirable).
  • Culture Champion: A strong health and safety advocate who leads by example.
  • Problem Solver: Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills, with a focus on getting the very best out of a team.

What We Offer

  • Highly competitive salary of £65,000 – £70,000

  • Company pension scheme
  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Employee wellbeing programs and progression opportunities within a stable, long-standing business
