Role Overview
A leading transport and distribution operator running a high-frequency commercial haulage network is seeking a Group Fleet Manager. This strategic position takes full operational ownership of a fleet consisting of over 100 HGVs and 300 trailers. Managing assets across two primary internal Vehicle Maintenance Units (VMUs) located in Bardon and Northampton, your primary core mission will be to maximize vehicle availability, ensure uncompromised regulatory compliance, lead in-house workshop mechanics, and execute targeted cost-reduction strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the Fleet: Oversee more than 100 heavy goods vehicles and 300 trailers across the Bardon and Northampton sites.
- Lead the Workshop Teams: Directly manage, mentor, and develop the technicians, mechanics, and support staff within the internal Vehicle Maintenance Units (VMUs).
- Oversee Core Services: Ensure efficient daily delivery of MOT preparation, safety inspections, routine servicing, and truck wash operations.
- Reduce Vehicle Downtime: Proactively monitor and manage Vehicle Off Road (VOR) metrics to ensure assets are inspected, repaired, and returned to service rapidly.
- Control the Budget: Drive bottom-line profitability and cut costs by strictly managing parts procurement, fuel efficiency, tire contracts, and general maintenance expenditures.
- Source Right Equipment: Evaluate, procure, and implement modern garage machinery and diagnostic tools to elevate workshop efficiency.
- Guarantee Safety & Compliance: Keep the entirety of the fleet fully legal and strictly aligned with DVSA standards, Operator’s Licence obligations, and Health & Safety legislation.
- Hit Top MOT Rates: Take direct accountability for maintaining exceptional first-time MOT pass rates across all commercial vehicles and trailers.
- Track Fleet Data: Utilize advanced fleet management software to systematically monitor telematics data, vehicle tracking, MPG, fuel consumption, and underlying safety trends.
- Plan Fleet Investments: Analyze asset lifecycles and provide data-driven recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding vehicle acquisition, leasing, and fleet replacement cycles.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven track record in managing a large-scale commercial transport fleet (HGVs and Trailers).
- Direct experience managing internal, hands-on workshop environments and engineering teams.
- Deep working knowledge of DVSA regulations, O-Licence compliance, and transport safety laws.
- Strong financial acumen with a history of delivering tangible fleet cost savings.
- Transport Manager CPC qualification is highly desirable.
