About IFPI

IFPI advocates on behalf of its member record companies and works to champion and defend the recorded music industry worldwide. Our goal is to improve the environment for record labels to operate in and support the growth and evolution of a thriving music ecosystem around the world. IFPI is trusted by governments and international organisations as the advocate for the recording industry. Our work spans a wide range of fields, including worldwide policy engagement and campaigning, extensive industry data gathering and analysis, the launching and management of music charts, music copyright protection and enforcement, development of technology and data standards and managing best-practice in performance rights collections.

IFPI represents over 8,000 record companies, from international major companies to small local independent labels. IFPI’s head office is in London, with regional offices in Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Brussels, Miami, Nairobi and Singapore. We have national groups and affiliates in 60 countries.

The role

IFPI’s Global Legal Policy team works closely with its record company members to formulate and advocate for policies needed to create and maintain the right operating environment for them globally, including in relation to IP, trade, AI and data regulation. This involves, among other things, creating fair and sustainable digital markets worldwide, ensuring the legal and policy environment supports AI development that respects copyright, recognition of full performance rights for sound recordings, and a minimum 70-year term of protection for recorded music.

We are now looking for a Legal Policy Advisor to further strengthen the IFPI Global Legal Policy team, based in London, UK. The Legal Policy Advisor will participate in the formulation of industry legislative priorities and in devising effective ways to communicate them before national governments, regional bodies and international organisations using IFPI’s national, regional, and international assets.

The ideal candidate will have experience in policy work in an international setting and be an excellent communicator with proven organisational skills. The candidate must be comfortable working in a multi-stakeholder environment across markets and cultures.

General Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality analysis relevant to legislative and regulatory developments and support the development and execution of strategies and submissions to ensure that the rights of our members, who create, produce and invest in music, are properly protected and enforced.
  • Contribute to IFPI’s work to secure optimal operating environments and legal frameworks for IFPI member companies worldwide by developing and formulating industry policy positions and priorities in cooperation with IFPI member company counsels, IFPI regional offices, and national groups.
  • Assist IFPI’s regional offices and national groups with legislative campaigns and submissions to government to advance industry policy priorities.
  • Coordinate closely with IFPI’s communications, litigation and content protection teams to ensure alignment on priorities and positioning.

Position Requirements

  • Good working knowledge of copyright, media and entertainment law, AI and data regulation, and/or trade law.
  • Experience as a qualified lawyer or international relations/policy professional in a relevant area.
  • Proven track record of excellent written and oral communication skills - be capable of producing accurate and compelling written submissions.
  • Capable of fast and accurate legal analysis, with the ability to work independently.
  • Keenness to work as part of a global high-performance team.
  • Self-starter, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English with fluency in other major languages an advantage.

Please note: The duties and responsibilities listed above are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive. This job description is subject to review to ensure that it truly reflects the strategic direction requirements of IFPI.
