The Propeller Chief Consulting Engineer leads a team of engineering specialists to deliver the capability required by Dowty for development and maintenance of its existing and future products. The role is responsible for creating, developing, and maintaining the capabilities for propellers, ensuring that both customer and business strategic objectives are achieved consistently and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical ownership of the Propellers technical pyramid and chair the Propellers Design Board.
- Accountable for delivery of Design Board objectives across all focus areas.
- Engage with Engineering Discipline Leaders to agree competences and development plans for team members.
- Lead, support, and develop the Controlled Title Holder (CTH) team: recruitment, induction, career development, appraisal, training, coaching, and mentoring.
- Collaborate with other Propulsion and Additive Technologies (PAT) and GE Aerospace Pyramids and Design Boards to share best practice and identify opportunities for mutual benefit.
- Spearhead technical excellence within the engineering team, creating and enhancing processes and practices.
- Support improvement activities across the engineering organization, including root cause analysis, problem solving, and strategic programme planning.
- Interface with production and programmes organisations to ensure timely fulfilment of projects, actions, and communication of activities.
- Uphold and develop strong Lean principles, standard work, and daily management within the team; lead and support Lean activities and events.
- Participate in the future strategic direction for engineering, engaging with external partners and introducing new tools and techniques.
- Communicate and report through regular reviews covering status, projects, investigations, risks, and opportunities.
- Participate in the engineering leadership team to improve effectiveness, resolve issues, and develop better processes.
- Financial oversight: budgeting, tracking spend, approving labour voucher costs, travel expenses, and project spend.
- Champion technology, process, and tool advancement across the propeller life cycle.
- Lead design reviews, prepare for Tollgate readiness, and preside over formal technology and design milestone reviews.
- Promote safety and reliability initiatives, supporting certification and ongoing airworthiness.
- Mentor the global Controlled Title Holder community and pipeline.
- Support engineering quality initiatives and document lessons learned.
- Provide technical training and development initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Significant experience in Engineering/Technology and Functional Management.
- Equivalence to a Master’s degree or a relevant diploma with experience.
- Experience in aircraft or aerospace product development within a UKCAA/EASA Part‑21 Design Organisation.
- Technical background in aircraft engineering, ideally propulsion.
- Awareness of design practices, aviation policies, and procedures.
- Proven experience on design boards and ability to lead technical excellence.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, oral, and written communication skills.
- Structured problem‑solving mindset and ability to analyse and resolve complex issues.
- Ability to influence and interface effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Flexibility to adapt processes under adverse conditions.
