Role Purpose

The Storesman is responsible for the effective day-to-day management of the operational yard and materials supporting the SPEN overhead line programme. The role ensures materials, plant and equipment are received, stored, issued and controlled accurately, safely and in line with programme requirements, enabling site teams to work efficiently and without delay.

Key Responsibilities

  • Yard & Materials Management
    • Receive, check and store all incoming materials in line with company procedures.
    • Maintain organised storage areas including pole bays, racking and skips.
    • Load and unload deliveries safely, supporting site teams with material requirements.
    • Ensure the yard is kept clean, secure and compliant with health and safety standards.
  • Stock Control & Traceability
    • Maintain accurate, up-to-date stock records using company stock systems.
    • Issue materials against works orders and job numbers, ensuring full traceability.
    • Carry out routine stock checks and reconciliations.
    • Manage returns, damages and surplus materials.
    • Identify shortages, discrepancies or risks to programme delivery and escalate promptly.
  • Ordering & Supplier Liaison
    • Place material orders through approved supplier systems.
    • Monitor stock levels and forecast requirements in line with programme demands.
    • Liaise with suppliers and internal teams to ensure timely delivery of materials.
  • Safety, Compliance & Standards
    • Work in accordance with all company health, safety and environmental procedures.
    • Maintain safe manual handling practices and equipment use.
    • Ensure all materials, plant and equipment are stored and handled correctly.
    • Report hazards, near misses and incidents in line with company processes.
  • Team & Operational Support
    • Work closely with supervisors, planners and site teams to support operational needs.
    • Respond positively to changing priorities and urgent site requirements.
    • Support audits, inspections and operational reviews when required.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in a stores, yard or warehouse environment
  • Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage stock accurately in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Good communication skills to liaise with site teams, supervisors and suppliers.
  • Basic IT skills to operate stock control and ordering systems.
  • Physically capable of manual handling activities.

Desirable

  • Experience within utilities, construction or infrastructure environments.
  • Telehandler licence.
  • Full UK driving licence.
