About the Role:
As a Control Systems Engineer, you will gain hands-on experience in industrial automation while supporting the delivery of complex control, safety, and security projects. You will assist senior engineers with design, programming, commissioning, validation, and audit preparation. This is an excellent opportunity to develop expertise across multiple control platforms in highly regulated, GxP environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare technical documentation, wiring drawings, P&IDs, and test plans.
- Assist in the design, programming, and testing of PLC / SCADA / HMI / Drives / Motors.
- Support execution of thermal mapping and validation protocols.
- Provide support during FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, PQ and site commissioning.
- Assist with preparing for ISO and cyber security audits.
- Support senior engineers during client HSE audit preparation.
- Work within highly regulated industries and ensure solutions comply with GxP requirements.
- Participate in the on-call rota for out-of-hours support (remote or onsite).
- Provide holiday cover for site-based personnel (Wiltshire area) up to 25 days per year.
Skills & Experience:
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Control, Automation Engineering or similar.
- Knowledge of Rockwell and Siemens PLCs (exposure to Mitsubishi, Omron, Schneider Electric, Wago advantageous).
- Familiarity with WinCC, InTouch, Ignition SCADA / HMIs (knowledge of GE iFIX, Rockwell FTV advantageous).
- Basic knowledge of motor/drive commissioning (Festo / Siemens Starter / Sinamics).
- Basic knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Profibus, Profinet, MPI, Modbus, Red Lion Data Station).
- Understanding of electrical control panel wiring (ELV / LV), ability to conduct basic wiring and fault-finding.
- Understanding of Directives and standards associated with Process Safety, Machinery Safety, IACS cyber security including HSE - OG86 (qualification or working towards).
- Basic knowledge of CAD packages advantageous (AutoCAD Electrical / WSCAD / SkyCAD / VISIO).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
Location: IES UK Office is Nottingham, UK. Option to work from office is available if required. This is usually limited to project kick-off or testing / FATs. This role is predominantly work from home or on customer sites. Attendance at or work from an IES office or workshop is not mandatory, so it requires an initiative-taker. UK & Republic of Ireland wide travel can be involved but majority of the works is based in Leeds Area (Project works) / Wiltshire area (Maintenance & Continuous Improvement Works) for the coming years.
Other info: The successful candidate must be able to pass BPSS Screening and obtain SC Security Clearance (requires 5 years UK residency). Full UK driving licence.
