We are looking for a Senior Substation Engineer – Protection and Control Engineer to join the Energy team at IDOM in Manchester. IDOM is a global engineering consultancy with a strong reputation in the energy sector. In the UK, we are supporting utilities with substation projects, applying our experience from major projects around the world in power grid, renewable energy, hydro pumped storage, synchronous condenser plants, interconnectors and other critical infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Define and implement protection schemes for transformers, busbars and feeders.
- Design IEC 61850 architecture and SCADA integration.
- Supervise relay logic configuration and FAT/SAT testing.
- Ensure compliance with UK utility standards and protection philosophies.
- Perform protection coordination studies as part of system validation.
- Provide technical leadership and client interface for utilities.
- Act as main technical contact for clients and coordinate with multi‑disciplinary teams.
Qualifications
- Degree or master’s in electrical engineering.
- Over 8 years of substation design (P&C) experience.
- Ability to work autonomously and lead design packages.
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the team.
- Familiarity with UK utility standards.
- Spanish language skills are a plus.
- Chartered Engineer status desirable but not essential.
- Enthusiasm for working in a multinational environment like IDOM.
