Overview
We are seeking an experienced Construction Safety Advisor to support our construction teams and act as the in‑house CDM (Construction Design & Management) expert, advising clients, project teams, and duty holders throughout pre‑construction, construction, and post‑construction phases. Ensure compliance with CDM2015 regulations, support Principal Designer duties, and embed a safety-first mindset. Facilitate safe and efficient project delivery by integrating health and safety into planning and design decisions.
Responsibilities
- Lead compliance with CDM2015: support design teams, coordinate pre-construction information, check contractor competence, and handle notifications.
- Conduct design-phase reviews and regular site inspections to identify hazards and apply effective controls.
- Oversee and audit Construction Phase Plans and HSE F10 project notifications for notifiable projects.
- Conduct site safety audits, hazard reviews, and designer risk assessments; ensure effective welfare arrangements on-site.
- Advise on contractor and designer appointments, procurement of CDM‑competent teams, and integration of HOP (Human & Organisational Performance) principles.
- Provide training, briefings, and ongoing support to internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Maintain oversight of legislation updates, guide proactive compliance, and support continuous improvement.
- Produce professional reports, deliver presentations, and manage stakeholder communications.

Base location: Reading – With frequent travel

What you should bring to the role
To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you’ll need are:
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate/Diploma or equivalent.
- Chartered IOSH membership (CMIOSH) or Incorporated Member of APPS. (IMaPS).
- Strong working knowledge of CDM2015, HSWA, Control of Asbestos Regulations, Legionella control, etc.
- Extensive experience in CDM, construction health & safety, or Principal Designer/Advisor roles.
- Proven track record managing CDM duties on multiple UK construction or refurbishment projects.
- Experience liaising with clients, designers, contractors, and the HSE.
- Conducting design and site safety audits, risk assessments, and F10 notifications.
- Competent in design risk management and pre-construction planning.
- Excellent communication skills—verbal, written, and formal reporting.
- Incident investigation skills: root cause analysis driven by HOP principles. Capability to lead no-blame reviews and learning-focused after-action assessments.
