We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established national insurance company for a Development Underwriter based in Scotland. This is a home-based, market-facing role with a clear focus on broker development and new business generation across the Scottish commercial market.
This hire is central to that — not a like-for-like replacement, but a genuine development role for someone with the appetite to build broker relationships and grow a regional book.
You will work with real underwriting authority, a defined product suite covering commercial P&C risks, and full support from an experienced central team. The expectation is that you bring the market knowledge, the broker contacts and the commercial drive — the business provides the platform, the capacity and the backing.
- Building new relationships with commercial insurance brokers across Scotland, including both national groups and independent brokers.
- Underwriting commercial P&C risks within your delegated authority, covering the SME and mid-market segment.
- Managing existing broker accounts, ensuring strong service levels and retention of the current portfolio.
- The split of your time will be weighted towards new business development, with the expectation that you are proactive, visible and well-connected in the Scottish commercial broking market.
We are looking for a commercially minded underwriter who combines technical ability with genuine broker relationship skills:
- Solid experience in commercial P&C underwriting, ideally within the SME or mid-market segment.
- An established network of broker contacts in Scotland — national and/or independent.
- Background from a composite insurer, MGA or similar underwriting environment.
- Technically capable of underwriting a broad range of commercial P&C risks with confidence and autonomy.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working in a home-based, field-facing role.
This is a well-supported, genuinely autonomous role with a competitive package and real scope for career development:
- Salary up to £80,000 depending on experience.
- Performance bonus scheme.
- Comprehensive benefits package.
- Home-based working across Scotland with flexibility to manage your own diary.
- A growing regional operation with genuine career development potential as the business expands.
- Strong central support from an experienced technical underwriting and actuarial team.
- A business that values underwriters and puts them at the front of its commercial strategy.
