We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established national insurance company for a Development Underwriter based in Northern Ireland. This is a home-based, market-facing position with a strong focus on broker development and new business across the Northern Ireland commercial market.
The business has a growing regional presence across the UK and is looking to strengthen its Northern Ireland operation with the appointment of a dedicated underwriter who can both develop new broker relationships and service the existing portfolio. The expectation from day one is that you are the face of the business in Northern Ireland — present, credible and building.
This is a dual-mandate role covering both new business development and portfolio management across the Northern Ireland broker market:
- Developing new relationships with commercial insurance brokers across Northern Ireland, including national networks and independent brokers.
- Underwriting commercial P&C risks within your delegated authority across the SME and mid-market segment.
The role is weighted towards new business development and suits someone who is comfortable managing their own diary, building relationships from scratch and working independently in a home-based environment.
We are looking for a commercially capable underwriter with a genuine presence in the Northern Ireland insurance market. The ideal candidate will combine solid technical underwriting skills with strong broker relationships and the self-motivation to operate effectively without close day-to-day supervision:
- Solid experience in commercial P&C underwriting across SME or mid-market risks.
- An established network of broker contacts in Northern Ireland — national and/or independent.
- Background from a composite insurer, MGA or similar underwriting environment.
- Technically sound across a broad range of commercial P&C trade classes.
- Highly self-motivated and comfortable in a home-based, field-facing role with minimal day-to-day oversight.
- Demonstrable track record of new business generation, not just account management.
You will be working without a local team around you, so the ability to self-manage, prioritise effectively and stay visible in the market is essential. This is a well-supported, home-based role with genuine autonomy and a competitive package:
- Salary up to £80,000 depending on experience.
- Performance bonus scheme.
- Comprehensive benefits package.
- Home-based in Northern Ireland with flexibility to manage your own schedule.
- Genuine career development potential as the regional operation expands.
