Role Summary: This is not a typical production-line design position; instead, you will focus on solving unique, direct-to-client engineering challenges, always working on new and interesting projects. Many inquiries are for one-off or highly bespoke solutions—you will turn technical problems and original concepts into manufacturable, cost-effective results. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, collaborating across functions, and being actively involved in driving new solutions from initial brief through to successful production. You will develop, expand, and manage everything from feasibility and mechanical design to part numbers, BOMs, and engineering support—helping ensure every custom project meets the client's needs and our high standards.
About Us: We are a well-established, innovative engineering and manufacturing business with over 30 years of history and a strong track record of growth in our sector. Based in Scunthorpe, we are known for delivering high-quality, practical solutions for a diverse range of clients—covering everything from standard products to fully custom and bespoke designs. Our success is built upon decades of technical expertise, continuous improvement, and an ability to adapt to new challenges and technologies. You will be joining a stable, forward-thinking SME environment that values initiative, collaboration, and effective problem-solving. As the business grows, we are expanding our engineering team to support an increasing number of custom solution projects for our clients. Here, you will have a direct impact on how new and unique client requirements are translated into manufacturable, reliable results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Design: Develop and integrate bespoke hardware and solutions to client requirements
- Bill of Materials (BOM) Engineering: Create, manage, and correct BOMs to support production and resolve shop floor/stores issues
- Product Data Management: Set up part numbers, maintain accurate data, and ensure engineering info is correct
- Problem Solving: Troubleshoot day-to-day engineering and production challenges; implement corrective actions
- Collaboration: Liaise with production, stores, and other engineering team members for seamless project delivery
- Continuous Improvement: Suggest and implement process/design improvements—challenge established ways of working where required
- Personal Development: Opportunity to broaden technical skills and knowledge; exposure to multiple areas (design, development, systems, processes)
What We're Looking For:
- Relevant mechanical engineering qualifications or hands-on experience (apprenticeship or degree preferred)
- Demonstrable analytic and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable with both technical design and routine admin (e.g., BOM corrections and data management)
- Open-minded—willing to learn new software, methods, and support continuous team development
- Consistent, reliable, and able to own the role for minimum 2-3 years to ensure stability for the team
