Permanent | UK‑based | Remote First (Travel to client site in South Wales 2-4 times a month)
We're supporting a digital consultancy working on large, complex UK public sector programmes, and they're looking for a Technical Project Manager to take hands‑on ownership of delivery across technically demanding projects. This role suits someone who enjoys being close to the detail, is comfortable operating in complex delivery environments, and takes real accountability for getting technical work over the line properly.
What you'll actually be doing:
- You'll take day‑to‑day ownership of delivering technical projects within wider public sector programmes. That includes working with clients to clarify outcomes and constraints, translating those into clear technical deliverables, and shaping statements of work that suppliers can realistically deliver against.
- You'll work closely with technical teams and delivery partners to:
- Track progress, resolve issues, and keep delivery moving
- Challenge estimates and assumptions when needed
- Manage suppliers from mobilisation through to performance management, escalation and sign‑off
- You'll own the delivery fundamentals (project plans, risks, issues, dependencies and decisions) and provide clear, honest reporting to stakeholders and governance forums. Flagging problems early is valued far more than dressing them up in status updates.
- You don't need to be a developer, but you do need to be technically credible. You'll be expected to engage confidently in technical discussions and have a sufficiently strong understanding of technical concepts to challenge estimates and proposed solutions, ideally drawing on a hands‑on technical background earlier in your career.
- Most projects are delivered using agile or hybrid approaches within structured public sector environments, so balancing pace with assurance, compliance and quality is a key part of the role.
- The position is remote‑first, with travel to client sites when it genuinely adds value.
What they're looking for:
- Experience delivering technical projects in UK public sector environments
- Strong supplier and delivery‑partner management experience, including statements of work
- Confidence working across multidisciplinary teams and complex delivery landscapes
- Solid understanding of public sector governance, assurance and compliance
- Clear communicator who is comfortable owning delivery decisions
Why this role?
This is a permanent role within a consultancy that values pragmatism, quality and trust. You'll work on meaningful public sector programmes, with real ownership and without unnecessary bureaucracy. Applicants must be eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC).
