Purpose
This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate or early-career developer looking to build strong backend engineering experience within a collaborative and highly technical environment. You will work alongside experienced engineers on secure, large-scale government projects, gaining hands-on exposure to Java development, APIs, microservices, secure systems, and modern engineering practices.
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain SC Clearance and NPPV3 Clearance. To obtain clearance, candidates must have lived continuously in the UK for the past 5 years. Criminal convictions may affect eligibility.
Key Missions
- Develop and maintain software applications using Java and related technologies
- Support the design and development of backend services, APIs, and application features
- Work with existing frameworks, libraries, and reusable software components within the team
- Follow software engineering best practices including coding standards, testing, version control, and secure coding principles
- Assist with debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving software issues and defects
- Support software deployments, maintenance activities, and enhancements across live systems
- Contribute to technical discussions, sprint planning, and requirement analysis activities
- Build and maintain clean, readable, and well-structured code with guidance from senior engineers
- Produce clear technical documentation including code comments, diagrams, and development notes where required
- Participate in code reviews and collaborative team discussions to continuously improve development quality
- Follow established development processes and Agile working practices
- Communicate effectively within a collaborative engineering team environment
- Continuously develop technical knowledge and remain open to learning new tools and technologies
Profile & Other Information
- 1–2 years of commercial software development experience OR relevant internship/placement experience
- Strong understanding of core Java fundamentals and object-oriented programming principles
- Exposure to Spring Boot, REST APIs, or backend development concepts
- Understanding of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Familiarity with version control tools such as Git/GitHub/GitLab
- Strong willingness to learn and develop technically
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field preferred
