Job Title: Personal Assistant – 10 hours – BN/JLD/08/26
Job Ref: BN/JLD/08/26
Reporting to: Employer
Location: Worcester
Rate of Pay: £13.01 PAYE - £15 SELF - EMPLOYED
Nature of the job role:
We are looking for a friendly, reliable female Personal Assistant to support an 18-year-old autistic young woman with ADHD and significant anxiety. Jamie can take time to trust new people, so support will begin gradually and at her pace. Initially this may involve spending time together at home, doing activities she enjoys, short local walks and nearby trips, before gradually building towards greater community access and independence.
Who we are hoping to find
- Someone calm, patient, friendly, quietly spoken, reliable and not overpowering.
- A younger adult who can relate well to an 18-year-old may be a particularly good fit, although personality and compatibility are most important.
- Someone who can build trust gradually and understands that Jamie may be very quiet at first but can communicate much more freely once she feels safe and comfortable.
- A relaxed personality and good sense of humour are important.
- Shared interests would be a real advantage, particularly gaming, anime, gothic themes, art, horror/jump scares, animals and creative activities.
Main Duties:
- Build a consistent, trusting relationship with Jamie and introduce support gradually.
- Support short local walks and visits to shops initially, then gradually progress to larger outings as confidence grows.
- Support Jamie to attend small, quieter activities such as art or pottery sessions, animal centres/mini farms, nature activities, gaming or autism-friendly groups and other activities linked to her interests.
- Support confidence, friendships, community access and independence.
- Provide gentle encouragement with routines, personal hygiene, health and self-care without being controlling.
- Support simple meal preparation, shopping, budgeting and attending appointments.
- Help Jamie recognise when she is anxious, uncomfortable or overwhelmed, and encourage her to express when she does not want to do something.
- Plan activities around quieter times where possible and allow regular opportunities to sit and rest
- Jamie currently manages short car journeys best due to sensory difficulties and travel sickness.
- Walking can be painful and tiring due to mobility difficulties, so activities need to be flexible with regular rest breaks.
- Clear and fluent spoken English is essential because of Jamie’s communication and verbal-processing needs.
- Appropriate DBS and required employment checks will be arranged through the Local Authority / Direct Payments process
Hours of work:
10 hours per week, used flexibly. Jamie will not initially be expected to spend the full 10 hours out with the PA. Time and activities can build as trust and confidence develop.
Skills & Experience:
Formal qualifications are not essential, but applicants should have some relevant experience, training, current study or lived experience relating to autism, ADHD, anxiety, sensory needs, SEND or supporting young adults.
Applications are particularly welcomed from people currently studying Health and Social Care, Social Work, SEND, Psychology, Education or a related subject who feel they would be a good match for Jamie.
