The maintenance tasks performed by the Maintenance Engineer are divided into two types: time-based maintenance (also known as planned, scheduled, preventive or routine maintenance) and unplanned maintenance (also called unscheduled, corrective, reactive or breakdown maintenance). As a Maintenance Engineer, you will effectively service and repair the machinery, equipment and assets. You will be required to work on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and computerised systems.
In time-based maintenance, the Maintenance Engineer will perform maintenance checks at regular intervals and act preventively to avoid situations that may compromise the proper functioning of machinery and equipment, e.g. replacing worn components, lubricating gears, motors, pumps and mechanical moving parts, changing out dull tools, calibrating instruments and replacing filters, gears, valves, tubes and cables.
You will be responsible for ensuring machinery and equipment run smoothly in both manufacturing and facilities maintenance. Your work will involve preventative, predictive and breakdown maintenance. You will be required to record all maintenance activities on the company CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System).
The role will also require understanding and leading efforts on OEE, as one of the major factors of OEE is Availability (Downtime). You will respond immediately to machinery breakdowns, aiming to get the equipment up and running in the quickest time possible while ensuring Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality requirements are met.
Key responsibilities include:
- Drawing maintenance strategies and procedures, undertaking scheduled maintenance.
- Carring out routine maintenance work and responding to equipment failures.
- Diagnosing equipment breakdowns, repairing, and ensuring equipment is working correctly.
- Performing periodic inspections on plant machinery and automated systems.
- Scheduling planned and preventive maintenance work.
- Repairing and/or replacing broken or defective components.
- Checking repaired components and machinery to ensure normal functionality has been restored.
- Ensuring continuous cover of machinery and equipment in case of breakdowns.
- Organizing and undertaking routine checks of equipment, carrying out quality inspections, analysing the efficiency of current procedures and suggesting improvements.
- Identifying and investigating faults, repairing equipment, upgrading and modifying systems.
- Monitoring the performance of machinery and systems.
- Acquiring new, specialist components, fitting and calibrating new parts and systems, including overhauling and replacing parts according to schedule.
- Ensuring all systems comply with the latest health and safety legislation.
- Liaising with colleagues, clients and customers.
- Monitoring maintenance costs and managing stocks of supplies/spares.
- Organizing departmental resources to meet scheduled checks on machinery and parts.
- Finding and fixing faults and recalibrating instruments.
- Ensuring stock levels are available and highlighting shortfalls or low stock of regularly used items.
