We are seeking to appoint a Non‑Executive Director, ideally with financial experience, and an Associate Non‑Executive Director, ideally with a clinical background, to join our Trust Board. About Us
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) is one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in England. With over 14,000 staff, we deliver care across 48 clinical specialties, providing services to more than one million patients each year and serving a population of a similar size across South Derbyshire, South‑East Staffordshire and surrounding areas. The Trust operates across five hospitals, including the Royal Derby Hospital – our largest site – and Queens Hospital Burton. We also manage three community hospitals: Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital in Tamworth, Samuel Johnson Community Hospital in Lichfield, and Florence Nightingale Community Hospital in Derby. UHDB also manages many other clinical sites and provides a broad range of acute and community services, including one of the largest Trauma and Orthopaedics services in the country and children’s services at both Derby and Burton hospitals.
Main Duties
- Attend Trust Board meetings and other key engagements; the commitment is largely flexible.
- Provide constructive challenge, strategic oversight and independent judgement to support the Trust’s strategic vision, including the Exceptional Care Together strategy.
- Ensure governance and strategic oversight to promote long‑term sustainability.
- Maintain an inclusive culture reflecting the communities we serve.
- Applicants may hold part‑time appointments or be in full‑time employment, provided they can accommodate NED responsibilities alongside their current role.
Non‑Executive Director Responsibilities
- Provide appropriate oversight, governance and leadership to the Trust in pursuit of its strategies to deliver effective and high‑quality health and social care services.
- Model behaviours and values, set the tone and culture at the Trust Board, and align to the Trust values.
- Scrutinise the performance of the Executive Team in meeting agreed goals and objectives and monitor reporting of performance.
- Ensure the integrity of financial, clinical and other information, and that financial and clinical quality controls and risk‑management systems are robust and defensible.
- Determine appropriate levels of remuneration for Executive Directors, and have a prime role in appointing and where necessary, removing Executive Directors and succession planning.
Associate Non‑Executive Director Responsibilities
- Provide insight into the role and responsibilities of an NHS Non‑Executive Director and help bridge gaps in experience.
- Operate at board level and transition from executive to non‑executive roles.
- Experience board level exposure in large, complex organisations.
- Understand NHS structures, accountability, funding flows, regulators and the Board’s role in quality and safety.
- Maximum term of three years with an induction and development programme that includes:
- Access to Trust Board and Committee meetings and papers.
- An experienced NED buddy for regular feedback and advice.
- Access to training and networking opportunities for substantive NEDs.
