Reporting to the Head of People Services, you’ll lead a sizeable and experienced team, providing clear direction, support and credibility, while ensuring high-quality, pragmatic people advice is delivered across the organisation.

As People Manager, you’ll take ownership of the operational leadership of the HRBP and Recruitment teams, while working closely with senior stakeholders to support the delivery of people priorities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, developing and supporting a team of HR Business Partners and Recruitment Advisors, ensuring consistency, capability and confidence across the function
  • Acting as a senior escalation point for complex employee relations matters, including cases involving senior stakeholders
  • Supporting organisational change programmes, ensuring people impacts are well managed and clearly communicated
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across People, including People Experience and Payroll, to embed working practices, values and behaviours
  • Building strong, credible relationships with stakeholders across the university, offering constructive challenge where appropriate
  • Driving continuous improvement across all HR practices, procedures and ways of working

Successful Candidate:

This role will suit an experienced people leader who is comfortable operating in a unionised, complex stakeholder environment and who brings a practical, solutions-focused mindset.

Experience:

  • Proven experience leading and managing HR professionals, within an HRBP model
  • Strong employee relations capability, with confidence handling complex and sensitive casework
  • Experience working in environments with active trade union engagement and robust stakeholder challenge
  • A resilient, optimistic and realistic approach and able to support others through pressure and change
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust and credibility quickly
  • Sector background is flexible- while public sector experience is welcomed, it is not essential.

You’ll join a committed People leadership team at a point where your input will genuinely shape how the function operates going forward. Alongside competitive pay, the university offers a strong benefits package including enhanced annual leave, flexible working, wellbeing resources and access to on-site facilities.

If you’re motivated by leading people through change, strengthening capability, and making a tangible impact in a values-led organisation, this could be a highly rewarding next step.
