We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team. The role requires experience in both design and hands‑on engineering, with a focus on the Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) machine and ancillary equipment.
Key responsibilities
- Strong design skills using 3D CAD with proven experience of FEA, managing drawings database and ECR control.
- Hands‑on engineering – practical assembly, use of power & hand tools.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, product quality, reduce waste, and minimise costs.
- Apply best practice for engineering equipment such as bearings, pneumatic cylinders and fasteners.
- Lead projects to develop system design from concept to production.
- Use structured problem solving to determine root cause of overall equipment effectiveness, quality and operations issues.
- Identify, liaise and build working relationships with equipment suppliers.
- Introduce new technologies, equipment or automation systems to improve manufacturing capabilities and competitiveness.
- Collaborate with QA, engineering and design to ensure APQP activities are effectively delivered during process development.
- Specify and develop manufacturing processes for operations.
- Lead FMEA activities to reduce risk within the area of responsibility.
- Develop assembly instructions and quality control procedures for system assembly.
- Design layout for new manufacturing cells using lean principles.
- Analyse MES data and performance metrics to monitor production efficiency, identify trends, and drive improvements.
- Advance the I4.0 and I5.0 vision for a lights‑out, fully automated composite plant.
Must have
- Qualified to HND level or equivalent experience in an engineering discipline; degree level preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Mechanical or Design Engineer, with proven hands‑on and design roles.
- Strong knowledge of 3D CAD applications and mechanical design.
- Good understanding of manufacturing and machining processes.
- Knowledge of APQP and QMS systems.
- Proficiency in data analysis and statistical tools (Excel, Minitab, Power BI).
- Excellent project management skills, able to lead cross‑functional teams and deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
- Working knowledge of ISO and TS quality standards.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
- Self‑driven and able to work autonomously.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, methodologies and problem‑solving tools (Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5S).
- Experience with process optimisation, value‑stream mapping and root‑cause analysis techniques.
- Previous experience in machine building.
- In‑depth knowledge of SolidWorks and PDM.
- Experience with automated manufacturing equipment, incorporating robotics.
- Knowledge of composite materials.
