Join ICOMAT – Revolutionising the Future of Lightweight Manufacturing! iCOMAT is an advanced manufacturing company that invented Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) – the only proven technology for producing defect‑free curved‑fiber composite parts at industrial scale. We deliver the lightest structures possible for aerospace, automotive, defense, and space, at a rate and cost efficiency that far exceeds existing composite production processes. We build and operate automated factories for composite materials, delivering components to Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs.

The business has three main divisions: development of automated production machines, development of software design and production tools, and operation of the factory. We work with 25+ customers and completed the largest ever Series A in composites manufacturing to fuel a significant scale‑up, with growth plans that will see the business multiply in size over the next two to three years and expand operations into the UK, Europe and the US. The business has currently more than 130,000 sqm of production capacity with manufacturing facilities in the UK (Gloucester and Swindon) and the US (Dayton, Ohio); a Hardware R&D Centre in Bristol, UK; and a Software R&D Centre in Athens, Greece.

We are seeking a multi‑disciplined Senior Mechatronics Engineer to join our RTS Research and Development team, working on the next generation of RTS systems. The right candidate will enjoy a mixture of practical hands‑on work with office‑based design and analysis tasks, and demonstrate experience with both elements. As a Senior Mechatronics Engineer, you will be responsible for the specification and development of systems and architecture from early research phases (TRL 2) through concepting and integration of full‑scale demonstrator equipment (TRL 6+), working as part of a multi‑skilled team to deliver cutting‑edge manufacturing processes to ICOMAT factories.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead work packages and projects to build core technology bricks that will be leveraged in ICOMATs’ RTS systems
  • Work with other multi‑disciplined, highly skilled and motivated engineers and professionals to deliver the next generation of technologies into the ICOMAT value stream
  • Drive technology readiness from TRL 2 through TRL 6+, building engineering solutions from the ground up
  • Apply your specialist knowledge to challenging engineering problems to create novel solutions
  • Engineer data analysis and interpretation to drive decision making
  • Perform foundational work to build the RTS systems into an end‑to‑end fully automated lights‑out composites manufacturing facility
  • Support commissioning activities at sister sites and customer facilities where necessary
  • Support the generation of new code for PLC, robotic and SCADA systems
  • Modify and improve existing code to improve system capability, repeatability and reliability
  • Maintain a well‑structured and commented code base
