Full time / Part time Salary: £44,297- £49,813 pa, with potential for further progression to £56,082 with our pay progression scheme.

Location: Hybrid Contracted to our Wilmslow office. Our Wilmslow office will be relocating to Manchester city centre from 28 September 2026. Once the move takes place your contracted office will be Circle Square, Manchester. Through hybrid working we offer flexible home and office-based working opportunities and there will be times when you will be expected to attend the office to collaborate with colleagues or travel due to business need.

Job summary: The work of the Senior Case Officer BCR and International Transfers includes assisting with the timely and thorough review of international transfer instruments and liaising externally with BCR applicants and stakeholders concerning application and compliance of organisations with international transfer instruments, in particular Binding Corporate Rules (BCR).

Job description: Under UK data protection legislation, organisations are permitted to transfer data outside the UK using a number of tools including, using BCRs and other international transfer instruments. The ICO has an important role in assessing BCR applications and the use of other instruments by data controllers and processors including multi-national organisations and joint enterprises.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to the review of BCR applications to determine whether the BCRs meet the necessary requirements as set out in applicable UK legislation and the relevant guidance documents issued by the ICO.
  • Drafting written comments for applicant organisations following an assessment of a BCR application against the specified criteria.
  • Reviewing and providing comments or advice in relation to questions or issues concerning the application and use of BCR and other international transfer instruments or mechanisms.
  • Corresponding with organisations and/or their representatives.
  • Preparing necessary correspondence and approval documentation for organisations following the completion of UK approval processes.
  • Deliver UK BCR reviews, along with associated outcomes, in accordance with agreed timescales and processes.
  • Ensuring that applicants and all other relevant stakeholders (internally and externally) are kept up to date with the progress of any application or other matter.
  • Attending and contributing to meetings with a range of internal and external stakeholders concerning international transfer mechanisms.
  • Contributing to the updating of the internal tracking documents.
  • Assisting with updating ICO templates, precedents, procedures and knowledge base relating to international transfers and, in particular, BCRs.
  • Ensuring that updates and changes are received from organisations and reviewed, in particular, for substantive changes that affect the validity of an approved BCR application or other international transfer instrument.
  • Liaising and working with cross-departmental colleagues in relation to the review, application and on-going compliance with BCRs and other international transfer tools.
  • Providing advice to decision makers regarding possible solutions, options and issues necessary to ensure compliance with international transfer mechanisms and when complex or novel issues arise.
  • Assisting with preparation of input for briefs for ICO attendees at external meetings and conferences.
  • Representing the ICO at speaking events to promote our policy in respect of international transfers.

Person specification:

Essential criteria assessed at application stage:

  • Substantial experience of working in data protection, a regulatory environment; or experience of drafting or reviewing legal documentation.
  • Experience of successfully liaising with senior staff in external organisations and representing your organisation.
  • Experience working with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent intellectual and analytical ability. Including knowledge of data protection law, with the ability to apply and rapidly develop expertise in international transfers.
