Join our team as an Operations Engineer - High Voltage.
We are seeking an experienced high-voltage engineer to take a business-wide role supporting the safe, compliant and reliable operation of our high-voltage assets across Boulby, Tees Dock and defined underground assets.
Based at Boulby, with time split between the Boulby site and Tees Dock, this role acts on behalf of the Appointed Person in carrying out the majority of day-to-day high-voltage duties, while final sign-off authority remains with the Appointed Person.
The role combines statutory compliance, asset stewardship, maintenance coordination, contract ownership, transformer fleet management, standards and policy development, competence and training administration, and the development and delivery of projects to improve high-voltage assets.
About the role
- Support the safe, compliant and reliable operation of high-voltage assets across Boulby, Tees Dock and specified underground areas.
- Act on behalf of the Appointed Person in delivering the majority of day-to-day high-voltage governance and coordination activities, without final sign-off authority.
- Coordinate statutory inspection, maintenance and outage activities for high-voltage systems and associated infrastructure.
- Support the availability and reliability of high-voltage assets including transformers, switchgear, substations, protection systems, underground HV infrastructure, incoming supply infrastructure and dockside electrical distribution.
- Coordinate maintenance of the 66k V incoming supplies to Boulby, including the 2 x 66/11k V transformers, working with network providers and specialist contractors as required.
- Own the management approach for the transformer fleet, including lifecycle planning, maintenance strategies and replacement proposals.
- Develop and deliver high-voltage improvement projects to improve asset performance, resilience, compliance and safety.
- Prepare business cases and support CAPEX / OPEX planning for HV maintenance, lifecycle replacement and improvement projects.
- Establish, manage and oversee specialist external contracts required to support inspection, maintenance, repair and technical assurance activities.
- Work closely with operations / mining teams, maintenance planners, the Projects Manager, procurement, HSE, OEMs, network providers, specialist contractors and external inspection bodies.
- Support high-voltage switching and isolation management, including hands‑on involvement where competent and authorised, alongside administrative coordination of switching programmes, outages, training and competence records.
- Update and maintain business high-voltage standards, policies and supporting documentation.
- Provide technical support during HV faults, incidents, shutdowns and planned outages, including support outside normal working hours where required.
About you
- Degree‑qualified in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent level qualification with relevant HV experience.
- Experience with high-voltage systems including transformers, switchgear and protection systems.
- Knowledge of statutory compliance requirements and safe systems of work for HV assets.
- Mining or heavy industry experience.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to travel regularly between sites.
- Ability to work in an underground mining environment and meet the required medical / fitness standards for underground access.
- Chartered Engineer status, or working towards chartership.
- Experience writing and updating engineering standards and policies.
- Experience maintaining competence records and coordinating training.
- Experience managing HV service contracts and specialist contractors.
The role also includes responsibility for defined underground assets and requires underground access where necessary.
