This is a fantastic opportunity for construction engineering professionals to re-focus their career and take on inspector positions with our essential organisation. So, if you’re ready to use your engineering expertise to protect lives and shape safer construction across Great Britain, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role

As a Specialist Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will use your civil and structural engineering expertise to help ensure construction activities across Great Britain are carried out safely and in line with the law. Working alongside other technical specialists, you will inspect a wide range of construction environments, assess how risks are managed, and investigate incidents to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.

Your work may involve analysing structural failures, supporting complex investigations, or providing expert technical input following serious incidents involving plant, equipment or emergency response situations. A significant part of the role focuses on applying engineering judgement within a legal framework, producing authoritative reports and contributing specialist insight that influences enforcement, policy and industry standards.

Additionally, you will:

  • Lead or support technical investigations into construction engineering incidents
  • Produce detailed reports to inform health and safety outcomes and legal decisions
  • Act as an independent expert witness at tribunals, inquests and prosecutions
  • Share intelligence and specialist advice to support policy, research and guidance

Please note, enrolment in the Specialist Training Programme (STP) is a legal requirement that you will be required to study for and successfully complete.

About You

To be considered as a Specialist Inspector, you will need:

  • A breadth of Civil and Structural Engineering experience, including knowledge of site processes and techniques
  • Experience working to UK safety standards in a construction environment
  • Knowledge of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015
  • An understanding of contractual appointments and the design, specification and practical application of design decisions on site
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree (or equivalent) relevant to civil or structural engineering
  • To be a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers or Institution of Structural Engineers and registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer
  • A full, valid driving licence

Membership of other professional bodies will be considered if equal and equivalent to ICE or IStructE. Please note, you will be required to inspect and visit sites across Great Britain. This will require regular travel and occasional overnight stays.

The closing date for this role is 9th March 2026.
