Our client is a household name in residential development, and they have an opening for a civil engineer in the design and technical team in Chelmsford. Candidates must have previous experience in this sector. The teams play a key role in every aspect of housing design and innovation. They research optimal materials at the best cost and work across a diverse range of sites, often involving existing buildings with unique challenges. The team focuses heavily on new materials, sustainability and value while navigating evolving building and environmental legislation.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager or Technical Director, the role is responsible for overseeing the design of infrastructure and groundworks packages for residential developments. Duties include:
- Procuring service records and arranging enquiries for new developments, ensuring payments are made on time.
- Managing the work of external consulting engineers who produce designs for external works, foundations, estate roads and sewers, including those related to Section 38, 104 and 278 agreements.
- Helping secure adoption agreements and ensuring bonds are managed appropriately.
- Contributing to structural design requirements, and continuously reviewing consultant designs for value engineering and statutory compliance.
- Collaborating with wider technical colleagues is essential for the discharge of building regulations and planning conditions.
Candidates should be educated to HNC/HND level in an engineering discipline with at least 5 years' post-qualification experience, ideally gained in a civil or structural design environment. They should be confident negotiating with external bodies such as sewerage undertakers and highway authorities, and able to coordinate effectively across the design team to meet programme requirements. Strong IT skills are essential, especially with Autodesk products; experience with PDS or MicroDrainage is beneficial but not essential.
The role requires the ability to analyse site information, produce concise technical reports, prepare clear scopes for surveys and engineering work, and demonstrate a broad understanding of development engineering, from ground investigations and drainage strategies to detailed design reviews. Excellent salary and benefits on offer, as well as a company car or allowance and working from home 2 days a week.
