The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for permanent Structural Engineers / Bridge Engineers to join our Amey Consulting team for our Scotland account in Manchester / Newcastle / Sheffield with shared office space, attending the office when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Structural Engineers across these regions.
Amey delivers a range of local, national, and international infrastructure projects for clients including Transport Scotland, Network Rail, National Highways, Local Authorities, and Contractors. We have secured multiple long-term contracts and continue to grow and expand into new regions and markets.

The Role
As a Bridge Engineer, you will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion.
Key responsibilities include:
- Implementing project requirements to fully meet client specifications with relevant standards.
- Undertaking any work of a technical nature that falls within your ability and competence.
- Preparing and checking design approaches, calculations, drawings, and documents.
- Carrying out site visits, surveys, inspections, and supervising subcontractors.
- Preparing and checking feasibility studies, inspections, assessments, and technical reports to ensure compliance with Amey procedures.
- Working confidently with minimal supervision and checking the work of others.
- Assisting with supervision, mentoring, and development of team members from Graduate Engineers and Technicians to Assistant Engineers.
- Assisting with contract preparation, project planning, and programming.
- Ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly CDM regulations.
- Working within a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions.
- Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of scheme deliverables that meet quality, cost, and program criteria.
- Overseeing the actions of more junior staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
- Liaising with client and supplier representatives, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
- Managing a small, locally based, single-discipline technical team and ensuring their workload is delivered.
- Contributing to bid preparation and general work-winning activities.
- Driving effective health and safety practices within the team.
What You Will Bring to Us
- Developed experience and expertise within the Structural engineering field, probably gained in an Assistant Engineer role or equivalent.
- Bachelor\’s or Master\’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
- Bachelor\’s / Master\’s degree in Civil / Structural Engineering.
- Chartered status (or working towards it) with ICE, IStructE, or CIHT, or other appropriate professional body.
- Demonstrable experience in the assessment, design, and management of bridges.
- Excellent understanding of structural behaviour and analysis.
- Knowledge of relevant codes and standards such as DMRB and Eurocodes.
- Enjoys working in a team environment, sharing ideas, and collaborating with colleagues.
- Proactive approach and commitment to health, safety, and welfare.
Desirable
- Experience with highway structures and major bridges.
- Experience in FE analysis using LUSAS, Atena, or MIDAS software.
