If you want to shape the operational heart of next-generation quantum technology, this Director of Operations role places you right at the centre of it. You’ll lead a growing technical team responsible for developing, building, and validating the core devices that power advanced quantum systems, while staying close enough to the detail to make meaningful, hands‑on contributions. It’s senior, strategic and influential — but still very much an operational, sleeves‑rolled‑up position.
Our client develops cutting‑edge quantum hardware designed to deliver highly scalable and reliable processors. They combine deep scientific expertise with practical engineering to move quantum computing from research labs into real‑world application. As they expand their device capability, they’re strengthening operational leadership to ensure quality, pace, and technical execution remain aligned with ambitious growth plans.
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Director of Operations will take accountability for the full device operations function — from internal fabrication and assembly to testing, packaging and supplier management. You’ll lead the transition from prototype builds to more structured early‑stage production, ensuring the team, processes, and partners scale effectively.
Responsibilities- Providing hands‑on leadership to the device operations team, developing capability, setting standards, and ensuring technical excellence.
- Overseeing manufacturing, packaging and test workflows, and stepping into the technical detail where required to unblock issues.
- Managing and strengthening supplier relationships, ensuring component quality, yield and delivery timelines meet programme needs.
- Implementing and improving processes that support both rapid development cycles and long‑term production reliability.
- Working with design, engineering, and programme teams to synchronise device readiness with product and roadmap objectives.
- Taking ownership of operational planning, capacity considerations, and risk management across the device lifecycle.
- Strong technical understanding of semiconductor, photonics or microelectronics manufacturing, with comfort operating between engineering depth and operational oversight.
- Experience guiding complex hardware from early lab builds through to structured low‑volume production.
- Leadership experience in technical environments, with a practical and calm approach to problem solving.
- Confidence managing suppliers, quality considerations, materials flow and operational dependencies.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder alignment skills across engineering, programme and operational functions.
You’ll be joining an organisation where the technology is genuinely frontier‑shifting, the team is highly capable, and your influence will be felt immediately. It’s senior enough to shape strategy and direction, but grounded enough to stay close to the devices, the people, and the day‑to‑day decisions that determine success.
