We’re looking for an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to take on a key technical leadership role within a complex hardware programme.
You will act as the technical lead for tape handling and control, ensuring robust mechanical performance across the system. This includes:
- Defining mechanical tolerances, repeatability requirements, and verification methods to ensure reliable system behaviour.
- Reducing technical risk related to tape positioning, path control, and mechanical interfaces.
- Supporting initial system integration, identifying risks early and resolving them through structured build and test activities.
- Enhancing life-test methodologies to assess tape management performance under realistic operating conditions.
- Peer reviewing mechanical designs, test plans, and verification evidence to ensure technical quality.
- Providing technical leadership and guidance to engineers without formal line management responsibility.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Around 8+ years of industry experience in mechanical engineering or precision hardware development.
- Proven experience leading the delivery of mechanical systems, subsystems, or major workstreams.
- Experience defining mechanical requirements, tolerances, repeatability, and verification strategies.
- Understanding of quality requirements for mechanical systems, beyond performance metrics.
- Hands-on experience building, testing, debugging, and improving mechanical hardware.
- Knowledge of mechanical failure modes (e.g. wear, alignment, tension, friction, material handling).
