A leading technology business operating within advanced wireless communications is looking for a Network & Test Systems Support Engineer to support its R&D and test operations environment on an initial 6-month contract. The successful contractor will support complex networking and test lab infrastructure, helping to build and maintain robust end-to-end environments involving servers, networking equipment, and radio systems used in next-generation connectivity solutions. This role would suit an engineer with strong networking, Linux, and troubleshooting expertise who is comfortable working in fast-paced engineering environments. This is primarily an on-site position based in the Cambridge area. Engineers working the night shift will operate remotely while remaining fully on call throughout the shift and must be able to attend the office at short notice if required.
Key responsibilities
- Configure and support enterprise-grade network infrastructure including VLANs, routing, firewalls, QoS, and IPv4/IPv6 environments
- Build and maintain scalable end-to-end test environments involving networking, servers, and wireless/radio components
- Monitor, analyse, and troubleshoot network and system issues using tools such as Wireshark, tcpdump, and SNMP
- Support interoperability and performance testing across integrated systems
- Develop and maintain automation scripts for provisioning, configuration, and testing
- Ensure systems follow security and compliance best practices
- Work closely with cross-functional engineering and development teams
Required Experience
- Strong Linux systems administration experience (Ubuntu, RedHat, CentOS)
- Hands-on networking experience across Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies
- Strong understanding of IPv6, dual-stack networking, subnetting, DHCPv6, and TCP/IP
- Experience with enterprise or service-provider-grade networking hardware
- Experience with 10G Ethernet technologies (copper and fibre)
- Knowledge of virtualisation and container technologies including VMware, KVM, Docker, or Kubernetes
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable working independently and within collaborative engineering teams
Desirable skills
- Python, Bash, or Ansible scripting and automation experience
- Exposure to CI/CD or automated testing environments
- Understanding of 4G/5G network architecture
- Experience with network traffic generation or performance testing tools
- Industry certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, or JNCIP
