Responsibilities include performing a variety of routine unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor and maintenance work, safely operating vehicles, tools, and equipment required to maintain the general appearance of the City, assisting with the removal of trash and debris, and maintaining, replacing, and repairing streets, sidewalks, medians, parkways, traffic signals, and signage. This position reports to the Public Works Supervisor and Public Works Director and will require overtime, weekend work, and emergency response during severe weather or infrastructure failures.
Key responsibilities:
- Loads and unloads supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Picks up asphalt from the asphalt plant.
- Breaks up, picks up, and dumps asphalt, dirt, and debris.
- Prepares area for asphalt; oils area using a compressor; dumps, spreads, and rakes asphalt; seals, caps, and cleans area.
- Provides traffic control, setting up and removing signage, cones, and barricades as appropriate to the job site.
- Weeds, cultivates, plants, fertilizes, and irrigates landscaped medians and parkways.
- Safely uses power equipment and hand tools to mow, aerate, and edge lawn areas.
- Prunes and trims trees, shrubs, and hedges; stakes trees as necessary.
- Rakes, sweeps, and vacuums leaves and lawn clippings; clears debris from the work area.
- Care and maintenance of plants, trees, grasses, flowers, and shrubs.
- Picks up concrete as needed.
- Breaks up, picks up, and dumps concrete, dirt, and roots.
- Removes forms and cleans the work site.
- Repairs storm drains.
- Digs ditches and cleans out culverts.
- Pothole patching.
- Performs maintenance, repair, and installation of asphalt, signs, lighting, concrete, storm drains; performs related maintenance and repair of storm drains and equipment.
- Safely operates a variety of tools and equipment used in maintenance and construction.
- Keeps records and logs.
Required abilities include:

Qualifications:
- Must possess a regular driver’s license; CDL Class B license not required.
- Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
- Must be available to work overtime and/or in emergency situations that may fall outside of normal business hours.
- Must be able to work in the described work environment and conditions.

Physical demands include:
- Climbing ladders.
- Stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching to reach, standing for long periods, and sitting for extended periods while operating vehicles and equipment.
- Walking; lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects weighing up to 75 pounds; using finger dexterity and hand strength to operate and grasp tools and equipment.
- Exchanging ideas and information verbally; hearing to receive detailed instructions.
- Seeing at arm's length up to twenty feet with a good field of vision and ability to distinguish basic colours and shades.
- Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or moving surfaces.
- Repetitive use of feet and hands to operate vehicles and/or equipment; feeling attributes of objects by touch.
Work environment:
Dependent upon assignment, essential duties of this classification are performed primarily in a field environment in various weather conditions. Work is performed daily in an atmosphere of constant noise; around moving objects and vehicles; on ladders and scaffolding; and occasionally below ground. Incumbents are frequently subject to vibration, exposed to smoke, fumes, gas, dust, grease, oil, pesticides, chemicals, treated water, and untreated sewage, and may occasionally work in confined spaces, perform duties with hands in water, and may be exposed to electrical energy.
