At IBM, our designers are responsible for ensuring the service or product addresses the needs of the people who use it and meets the business objectives of the client. Designers are essential members of any cross-functional team, acting as a conduit between the users and the business. Through Enterprise Design Thinking by IBM and various user-centred design approaches, you will deliver user-centred outcomes in agile teams, working closely with product owners, developers, testers, business analysts, and many more to design and build services based on web, mobile, and new emerging technologies.

As a Design Associate, you will join a team with other designers working on new features for one of our diverse clients. Your day will involve researching and reviewing findings, creating designs, iterating through testing and collaboration from senior designers, creating detailed design specifications to help with handover to developers, and discussing your designs with stakeholders and senior leadership.

You are expected to bring design experience from your academic training or previous employment and manage completing design work as part of a wider design team while learning from those around you as you grow your career across:

  • Service design: collecting user insights to determine the shape of a service and how it serves all its users, including internal users and non-digital channels.
  • UX design: architecting and defining the on-screen experience and how users move through the architecture.
  • Visual design: ensuring that the designs communicate effectively with the experience in an accessible and delightful way.
  • User research: strategizing how to collect vital data, undertaking the research, and synthesising it into tangible and meaningful user needs.
  • Content Design: evaluating needs and crafting clear, concise, and accessible language to help users navigate services and communications.

Our Design Associates go on to become Senior Designers, Design Directors, and Design Principals leading design across key IBM clients like NHS, Scottish Government, Boots, Wimbledon, and Ferrari.
