In this role, you'll work in one of our IBM Consulting Client Innovation Centres (Delivery Centres), where we deliver deep technical and industry expertise to a wide range of public and private sector clients around the world. Our delivery centres offer our clients locally based skills and technical expertise to drive innovation and adoption of new technology.
Your role and responsibilities
We are seeking a Junior FullâStack Developer to join IBM's cloud development teams, contributing to projects that support UK publicâsector and defence clients. In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers and technical leads to develop, enhance, and maintain cloudâbased applications that are used in secure, missionâcritical environments. As part of IBM's multidisciplinary delivery teams, you will participate in the full software development lifecycle, from designing and coding to developer testing and deployment. You will gain handsâon experience with modern fullâstack technologies and cloudânative development approaches, while learning how to deliver solutions that meet the high standards of security, reliability, and performance required in government and defence programmes.
Responsibilities
- Code Development: Write, test, and debug highâquality code for cloudâbased applications, using appropriate programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
- Collaboration: Work closely with crossâfunctional IBM teamsâsuch as architects, testers, DevOps engineers, and security specialistsâto support planning, code reviews, problemâsolving, and technical delivery.
- Learning and Growth: Build your expertise in cloud platforms, fullâstack development, and secure engineering practices through structured learning, mentoring, and onâtheâjob experience.
- Process Adoption: Learn and follow IBM's engineering processes, including agile delivery methods, secure coding practices, and quality assurance standards, and contribute to their continual improvement.
- Documentation Support: Assist in creating and maintaining clear technical documentation for applications, components, and development processes to support knowledge sharing and longâterm maintainability.

Required technical and professional expertise
- An emerging understanding of how frontâend and backâend components interact, including basic knowledge of APIs, data handling, and application architecture.
- Familiarity with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and an understanding of common cloud services used in application development.
- Competence with version control tools like Git, including branching, merging, and contributing to shared codebases.
- Basic troubleshooting and analytical skills to address everyday technical issues and assist in resolving defects or performance problems.
- Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to engage with teammates, follow guidance, and contribute to collaborative development practices.

Preferred technical and professional experience
- Experience working with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, including building, deploying, and managing containerized applications.
- Knowledge of CI/CD concepts and tooling, with the ability to contribute to automated build, test, and deployment pipelines.
- Familiarity with serverless architectures and an understanding of when serverless functions are appropriate for scalable, costâefficient workloads.
- Understanding of microservicesâbased architectures and eventâdriven design patterns, including how services communicate and scale.
- Practical experience using databases, both SQL and NoSQL, with an understanding of data modelling, performance considerations, and query optimisation.
