Your role and responsibilities:

We are seeking a Managing Application Developer to support IBM’s Public Sector and Defence projects by leading cloud development initiatives. In this role, you will oversee the design, development, and maintenance of cloud-based applications while mentoring junior and mid-level developers. You will manage the full software development lifecycle, with a strong focus on designing, coding, testing, and deploying cloud-native solutions using modern full-stack technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • System Design: Architect, develop, and maintain secure, scalable cloud applications using full-stack technologies, aligned with the needs of IBM’s Public Sector and Defence clients.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor junior and mid-level developers, promoting a culture of innovation, quality, and technical excellence.
  • Problem-Solving: Oversee the resolution of complex technical challenges, applying deep expertise in full-stack cloud development to mission-critical environments.
  • Continuous Improvement: Enhance development practices and processes, ensuring they meet industry standards and IBM delivery expectations.
  • Technical Vision: Influence and shape the technical direction of cloud application development within the Public Sector and Defence portfolio.
  • Project Leadership: Lead smaller projects end-to-end, from architecture and design through deployment, demonstrating strong technical and project leadership.
  • Mentorship: Support the growth of Junior Developers through ongoing coaching and knowledge sharing.

Required technical and professional expertise:

  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated mastery in full-stack development, including both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Ruby) technologies.
  • Cloud Expertise: Extensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and services.
  • Leadership: Proven leadership qualities, with a track record of managing teams and delivering projects.
  • Problem-Solving: Exceptional problem-solving capabilities, with a history of effectively addressing and resolving complex engineering issues.
  • Communication: Exemplary verbal and written communication skills to engage with team members, stakeholders, and upper management.

This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). An additional range of Personal Security Controls referred to as National Security Vetting (NVS) may apply, this could include meeting the eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).

Preferred technical and professional experience:

  • Hands-on experience working with containerization platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong understanding of serverless architectures and microservices-based application design.
  • Familiarity with event-driven systems and related design patterns.
  • Solid knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL database technologies.
  • Experience applying cloud security best practices across application and infrastructure layers.
