Overview
As Senior Cable Design Engineer, you will lead high-value HV cable projects from feasibility to detailed design, focusing on 33kV–132kV networks to keep power flowing for communities. You’ll work closely with the Circuits design lead, delivering robust engineering solutions while guiding less experienced colleagues. The role supports our Net Zero ambitions through safe, efficient, and innovative cable systems. You’ll engage with multidisciplinary teams to drive improvements and share technical expertise.

Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver cable engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design for high-value, complex projects
- Prepare engineering specifications and designs, ensure compliance with legislation and policies
- Resolve statutory, land, and consent matters for underground cable routes and plan outages
- Prepare and review cable drawings and specifications for construction and procurement, control documentation
- Provide specialist input to resolve site/cable issues, investigate faults, and assess cable works and suppliers
- Promote best practice and evaluate new ideas for cost savings, efficiency, and safety
- Liaise with global multi-disciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions
- Supervise and mentor less experienced staff
- Contribute to training needs assessments and develop technical/safety packages for new products and innovations
Key requirements
- Degree in Engineering or equivalent practical HV cable experience
- Significant proven experience with high-voltage power cables and equipment
- Proficiency in Cymcap software for cable design and evaluation
- Knowledge of CDM and Health & Safety best practices in design
- Ability to represent teams on cable engineering matters and advocate for industry standards
- Experience assessing engineering documentation for feasibility, budget delivery, and quality
- Experience preparing Project Quality Plans (PQPs) and delivering required deliverables
- Effective cross-disciplinary communication and coordination skills
- Proactive problem-solving to investigate and resolve complex technical issues
- Effective communication and coordination across multi-disciplinary teams
- Proactive problem-solving and practical, innovative thinking
- Mentorship and development of less experienced staff
