As part of Network Digitalisation, the Development department is responsible for developing remote control and monitoring technology for the distribution network to improve system performance for our 3.5m customers. As we continue to move towards a low carbon future, the reliance on distribution automation and monitoring for proactive network management is becoming more critical. Developing staff to secure the future of the distribution system is a key objective for Processes & Technology. The role will be focused on the specification, development, testing and approval of control and monitoring equipment. This role is best suited to an enthusiastic individual with an aptitude for learning new technology and who feels comfortable working across multiple simultaneous tasks.

What you’ll be doing

  • Perform all duties with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environmental matters
  • Perform all duties in support of SPEN operational excellence goals & business drivers
  • Draw upon knowledge of the distribution network to:
  • lead the modernisation of control and monitoring equipment
  • lead the development of new control and monitoring equipment and enhance the use of existing technology on the network
  • Develop technical processes for the installation, operation and maintenance of control and monitoring equipment
  • Specify new equipment and manage accompanying frameworks
  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation to enable skills transfer to operational staff
  • Represent the UK on global practice groups and projects
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on technical subjects to staff from technician, engineering and management grades
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures, strategies, standards and specifications in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of asset-base consistent with regulatory requirements
  • Carry out detailed investigations of unusual, often complex, fault-modes on the installed equipment-base
  • Management of external consultants and contractors as required
  • Assist with the identification and preparation of annual budgets and manage Capex and Opex spend against project, task and activity budgets, recommending annual work programme and budgetary requirements as required
  • Mentor graduates, apprentices and Year-In-Industry students and other staff members to fulfil department obligations to succession planning
  • What you’ll bring

    • Qualified to HNC, or equivalent in an engineering discipline (degree-level preferential)
    • Knowledge of control and monitoring equipment and SCADA protocols
    • Adept, inquisitive and determined aptitude when interfacing with/configuring new technology
    • Experience of managing a number of projects simultaneously with minimal direction
    • Creative and innovative approach to problem solving and good inter-personal and communication skills
    • Knowledge of Energy Networks health & safety requirements and compliance
    • Knowledge and experience of the Distribution network to create processes and provide support in the installation and maintenance of control and monitoring equipment
    • A broad understanding of business operations
    • Highly effective at expanding personal skills and practices from relationships with manufacturers and other industry experts
