Salary from £96,000 to £120,000 + 40% Bonus + Family Medical + Car allowance

Help us create a better future, quicker. As a prominent member of the SP Distribution Licence senior management team, the job holder provides strategic direction, assurance and performance leadership across the allocated Strategic Projects portfolio and associated teams. The role has accountability for governance, prioritisation, integration and performance assurance across key projects ensuring regulatory (RIIO), customer, safety and commercial requirements are met. The job holder is ultimately accountable for portfolio performance through governance, setting direction, agreeing priorities and holding programme delivery leaders to account for delivery of scope, cost, schedule, safety, quality and customer commitments, escalating material risks and trade-offs through the Licence governance.

The role is established to strengthen senior oversight during ED2 and to support the development and implementation of the ED3 Target Operating Model for Capital Delivery. The role therefore operates in a period of organisational transition, where delivery accountabilities, interfaces, span of control and governance arrangements may evolve as the future operating model is implemented.

What you’ll be doing

  • Ultimate responsibility for portfolio governance and performance leadership across the allocated Strategic Projects portfolio, with accountability for achieving portfolio safety, quality, cost, schedule and customer outcomes through clear direction, assurance and escalation.
  • Strategic oversight of SPEN’s investments and assurance they are designed efficiently and effectively, consistent with objectives, with delivery assured to specifications, policies, budgets and timetables.
  • Champion excellent customer service across the portfolio, setting portfolio standards and escalation routes to ensure customer/stakeholder commitments are met and material issues are owned to resolution through appropriate internal and external interfaces.
  • Provide portfolio-level leadership of key internal and external interfaces, ensuring dependencies, consents, access and governance decisions are secured to enable efficient delivery of projects and programmes.
  • Assure the portfolio has the engineering design capability and integrated design support required, agreeing accountabilities and resolving cross-functional constraints to enable delivery.
  • Provide strong commercial leadership across the portfolio, setting expectations for value, productivity and risk-managed decisions.
  • Set the portfolio resource strategy and allocation, aligning capacity and capability to investment level, geography, complexity and risk.
  • Championing a demonstrable Health & Safety culture across the portfolio, ensuring appropriate governance, assurance and intervention are in place.
  • Provide senior-level reporting and governance communication on portfolio performance, risks, issues and decisions.

What you’ll bring

  • Degree qualified in Engineering or a related discipline, preferably with a supplementary project management qualification.
  • Highly developed line management capabilities given the dimensions and responsibilities of the role.
  • Developed understanding of the technical aspects of electricity distribution, and specifically power systems design.
  • Expert level project manager, with a track record of involvement in successful large scale, complex investment programmes.
  • High literacy and numeracy skills, capable of working effectively in a data rich environment.
  • Extensive commercial knowledge relating to engineering construction in the UK.
  • Strong interpersonal skills given requirement to interface with many influential customers and stakeholders.
  • Highly developed knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of formal planning and consenting processes for major infrastructure developments.
