Help us create a better future, quicker. SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. A significant proportion of this investment is associated with Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) which is a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) link between Scotland and England - linking Westfield (Scotland) and Walpole (England). This project is being delivered in partnership with National Grid Energy Networks and will enable the transmission of up to 4GW of electricity, enough to power over 4 million homes.
The Commercial and Contract Manager assumes a leadership role, works within the Contract & Commercial Team and as part of the wider EGL4 Project team. Working collaboratively as part of a skilled, multi-disciplinary team, the Commercial and Contract Manager will be responsible for all elements of the commercial delivery of EGL4, including acting:
- As a key point of contact with Tier 1 Contractors, managing claims, variations and key commercial delivery issues;
- Managing the interface between the Contractor and a number of internal stakeholders including the Delivery, Engineering, SHES, Finance, legal and Commercial functions;
- Reporting to directorates within SPEN and NGET.
The positions may require frequent travel to various locations in the UK and occasional travel within Europe. The individual should be prepared to manage teams working at different project locations.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading all elements of contract and commercial management, implementation and delivery of the EGL4 Project (in conjunction with Quantity Surveyors, Legal representatives and Project Managers)
- Supporting the refinement and development of Project Commercial Strategies
- Establishing successful contractual and commercial processes & relationships with Tier 1 Contractors
- Management of Contractual Claims, Variations & Notices including preparation of formal contract communications
- Providing commercial guidance and training to the wider Project Team to support Project delivery
- Management of a team of Quantity Surveyors engaged in the delivery of Lot 1
- Liaise and support the PMO team to ensure timely and clear reporting throughout the business
- Deliver effective stakeholder management of the HVDC EPC Contractors through the development, implementation, and monitoring of KPI’s and contractual arrangements to ensure continuous improvement.
- Identification of lessons learned and required improvements to support the wider SP HVDC pipeline and otherwise support and collaborate with the wider SP HVDC team
- With the Project team, undertake monthly project reviews identifying mitigation of any potential commercial risks/disputes.
What you’ll bring
- Construction contract experience of major infrastructure delivery
- Legal experience or close experience of working with legal experts as the candidate will be expected to work closely with the Project Legal team.
- Experience in claims/dispute management
- Degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
- Contract management / Contractor relationship management experience (in EPC type contract ideally FIDIC).
- Proven experience of line managing QS/commercial/contract teams in a high value project/portfolio environment.
- Experience of implementing strong governance, control and risk management frameworks for contract and framework management.
- Experience of developing and managing Supply Chain relationships
- Proven analytical and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of the regulatory framework applicable to electricity networks is useful.
