What you’ll be doing

The post holder is mainly accountable for the fulfilment and outperformance of the innovation responsibilities for SPEN, as a regulated electricity licensee. The post holder will play a key role in ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the Transmission/Distribution Project Delivery Team with appropriate input from specialists drawn from internal stakeholders and external partners.

  • Project Management
    • Propose, Plan, Co-ordinate and Lead innovation projects activity including a sustainable innovation pipeline; budgetary control, scheduling and logistical aspects.
    • Act with your own initiative and independently to keep the project well managed, without direct guidance from line management.
    • Ensuring the compliance of Network Innovation Allowance and Strategic Innovation Fund Governance: proposing and delivering projects safely, on time and fulfilling all regulatory requirements.
    • Produce and maintain a programme of project activities using an appropriate project management tool.
    • Identify risks, propose and implement effective migration measures proactively.
  • People Management
    • The post holder will be one of the role models in the team, lead with example of a positive, open, encouraging and respectful team environment.
    • The post holder will be expected to carry out people management duties including but not limited to: objective setting, appraisal, performance review; understanding the HR policies when supporting team members.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Liaising with the internal/external stakeholders, ensure that all relevant stakeholders are aware of the project and the associated implications, opportunities and responsibilities that apply to them.
    • Assess and facilitate the implementation of enduring measures regarding the interactions of innovation projects with existing IT infrastructure, Real time systems (RTS), existing and new commercial framework and regulated interfaces TO/GBSO/DSO. This will include strategic and procedural aspects of grid monitoring, system planning & operation, investment and business model.
  • Expertise
    • In-depth understanding of regulated network business (electricity transmission networks preferred) and its engineering foundations.
    • Accountable for the review and audit of all project deliverables within and beyond the Project directions, including specifications, commercial indications of engineering specifications, compliance with technical standards, data validation, modelling tools etc. with the input of technical specialists where appropriate.
    • Primary point of contact for all technical matters relating to the innovation projects for both internal & external queries/actions.
  • Continued Improvements
    • With great personal ownership and initiative to contribute to the continued success of the department and the company by generating, facilitating new proposal/projects.
    • A positive, constructive, supportive team member and team leader.

What you’ll bring

  • Strong organisation and project management skills across cross functional work streams.
  • Highly self-motivated and self-confident individual with a positive ‘can do’ attitude, capable of influencing and co-ordinating the action of peers and influencing discussions with competitors.
  • Well-developed technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles; alternatively, have in-depth experience and understanding of the energy trading framework (such as DSO, TSO).
  • Technical understanding of all areas of system quality of supply and associated monitoring techniques (i.e. the interface of forecasting, real time energy trading, IT/communications infrastructure).
  • Confident to lead/coordinate a team in a technology challenging project with complex interface and multiple stakeholders.
  • Good interpersonal skills with good English written and oral communication skills.
  • Project management tools.
  • Microsoft office package including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Ability to influence and lobby both internal and external stakeholders to gain agreement and acceptance of solution and implementation approaches.
  • A Full and valid UK driving licence.
