Ian Farmer Associates, part of the RSK Group Ltd, is a geotechnical ground investigation company. Due to recent expansion and increasing workload, an exciting opportunity has become available for a Trainee Geotechnical Technician to join the team in Washington, Tyne & Wear, UK. No experience is required, and full training will be given. Suitable candidates will have an interest in a career working in a soil laboratory environment.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of physical tests on soil, rock and aggregate samples to the highest level of safety and quality standards.
  • Develop an understanding of the test methods and why samples are tested.
  • Assist in the calibration and maintenance of all technical equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment.
  • Ensure the quality of work produced is to high standards and tested in a timely manner.
  • Handle sample receipt, storage and disposal.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • 5+ GCSEs including English, Maths and Science.
  • Previous experience in a geotechnical or materials testing lab.
  • Good numeracy and literacy: able to write clearly and accurately.
  • A good eye for detail, diligent in following procedures.
  • Good IT skills, especially the use of MS Excel.

There will be lots of manual handling involved in the role and will require moving heavy items on a frequent basis.
