The opportunity
As an Engineering Manager, you’ll lead the engineering team within Business Services, responsible for high standards in software development, quality assurance, and security, while overseeing the growth of our engineering talent.
Business Services is the engine that drives our core loyalty capabilities, including identity, membership, currency & redemption domains that provide microservices and data products.

- Guide the Squad: Lead Tech Leads, Software Engineers, and Data Engineers (14 permanent team members, 3 direct reports)
- Contract Crew Captain: Oversee 25+ contract engineers

- Set the Bar High: Define and enforce engineering, security, and data quality standards in Business Services at IAG Loyalty
Coaching & Development
- Mentor Magic: Coach and develop team members, identifying opportunities for training and growth
Recruitment & Collaboration
- Hire the Heroes: Work with Product Owners and Managers to recruit new team members
- Mix it Up: Collaborate with product teams to rotate individuals across products to optimise skills and development
Community Builder
- Create Connections: Foster an engineering community of practice within Business Services
Influence & Culture
- Decision Dynamo: Positively influence decision-making with engineering principles in mind

What we need from you
- Leadership & Technical Expertise: Proven experience as an Engineering Manager with a background as a Tech Lead, particularly on backend services
- Backend Development: Proficient in Java, Spring Boot, and microservices, with a solid understanding of cloud technologies, ideally AWS
- Operational Accountability: Skilled in managing both development and operations with ownership of Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Agile & DevOps Culture: Experience with agile methodologies, DevOps principles, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices
- Architecture & Design: Competence in AWS and microservices architecture, with knowledge of domain-driven design
- Security & Testing: Familiarity with security best practices, testing approaches, monitoring, and observability tools
- Collaborative & Inclusive: Ability to communicate with non-technical colleagues and build strong, inclusive teams focused on equity, diversity, and high performance
The role has a blended base, between our Central London office and home. We trust you to make the right decision about the type of work that is best done in each location. We expect you’ll achieve a 50/50 split between the two and there may be times where you’ll want to visit our other locations to tell their stories, too (fully reimbursed).
