We are seeking an experienced Head of Underwriting Governance & Controls to lead the design and implementation of a robust first line risk and control framework within a complex insurance or financial services environment. This is a high-profile contract role offering the opportunity to work directly with senior underwriting and operations leadership to strengthen governance, risk management and control oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and embed the Underwriting Risk & Control Matrix (RCM).
  • Ensure clear accountability for risks and controls across the underwriting function.
  • Define and monitor risk appetite, inherent and residual risk positions.
  • Establish governance forums and reporting that provide leadership with a consolidated view of risk exposure and control effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement an assurance framework to assess ongoing control effectiveness.
  • Design and operationalise an effective First Line of Defence (FLOD) model.
  • Drive remediation activities and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare and present governance papers to senior committees and executive stakeholders.

Essential Experience

  • Extensive experience within insurance, underwriting, financial services, or another regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of the Three Lines of Defence model.
  • Proven experience developing and managing Risk & Control Assessments (RCAs/RCMs).
  • Experience establishing governance frameworks, committees and reporting structures.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive organisational change.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience operating in busy transformation or remediation programmes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including board and committee engagement.

Desirable Experience

  • Certified Manager or equivalent governance/risk qualification.
  • Experience centralising and optimising control operations.
  • Exposure to AI-powered tools and technology-enabled governance processes.
