Responsibilities
- Carrying out grass cutting, strimming, hedge cutting, litter picking, and clearing of paths according to schedules and required standards.
- Conducting play area inspections and undertaking minor repairs.
- Performing seasonal maintenance of flower beds, shrub beds, and gardens of remembrance in cemeteries, including maintenance, clearance, litter picking, and bin emptying.
- Engaging in planting, weeding, digging, hoeing, and watering of flower planters and formal displays as necessary.
- Assisting in the eradication of invasive plants and weeds, and managing encroaching grass and vegetation from pathways and roads.
- Undertaking prestart checks on vans, plant, and other vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, ensuring compliance with manufacturer\’s recommendations and completing daily defect sheets.
- Maintaining machinery and equipment in good working condition, expediting rectification of faults, and processing logs related to mileage and fuel.
- Performing arboriculture work from the ground, including felling small trees, crown raising, and clearing wind-blown or broken trees/limbs.
- Contributing to team performance and supporting the Supervisor in delivering a customer-focused service to achieve continuous improvement and innovation.
- Acting as an ambassador for the Council by being professional, courteous, and helpful.
- Ensuring adherence to health and safety standards, safe systems of work, processes, and housekeeping through regular checks and cleaning of vehicles, equipment, machinery, and working sites.
- Working independently and performing day-to-day tasks unsupervised when necessary.
- Following both written and verbal instructions from the Supervisor.
- Completing mandatory skills training, including health and safety training and industry updates as required.
- Undertaking any other comparable duties within the service, including snow clearance, grid and grating clearance, litter picking, and assisting with waste management tasks.
Qualifications
- Essential:
- Basic literacy and numeracy to understand work instructions, safety details, and quantity specifications.
- Ability to interpret work instructions and deliver/complete tasks to the appropriate standards.
- Previous grounds maintenance experience, including grass cutting, spraying, weeding, hoeing, and planting.
- Holding a full manual driving licence (B licence).
- Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team.
- An understanding of Health and Safety issues.
- Experience in a similar role, dealing with customers and/or the general public, and working in all weather conditions.
- Flexible approach to working and willingness to learn.
- Ability to operate within set guidelines.
- Good level of fitness to meet the job requirements.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Desirable:
- Experience and recognized qualifications in arboriculture work.
- Safe use of pesticides PA1/PA6.
- First Aid Certificate.
- B E trailer towing.
