What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a Traffic Engineer (Grade 10, SCP 40) to join the Engineering and Surveying team. The successful candidate will support traffic management projects, road safety initiatives, and transport planning, working collaboratively with colleagues, external contractors, and stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and monitor traffic management schemes and interventions
  • Carry out traffic surveys, feasibility studies, and data analysis
  • Prepare technical reports, drawings, and documentation to support traffic engineering projects
  • Assess and provide recommendations for road safety improvements
  • Advise internal teams, elected members, and external stakeholders on transport and traffic-related matters
  • Monitor compliance with highway regulations and statutory requirements
  • Support the planning and delivery of local transport schemes and maintenance programmes
  • Liaise with contractors, utility companies, and local communities on traffic projects
  • Participate in site visits and inspections to evaluate traffic conditions and scheme effectiveness
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and reporting of all work undertaken

Person Specification

Must Have

  • Relevant engineering qualifications (e.g., Civil/Transport Engineering degree or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in traffic engineering, transport planning, or highway projects
  • Knowledge of traffic management principles, road safety, and statutory regulations
  • Competence in data analysis, traffic modelling, and report preparation
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Membership of a professional engineering institution (e.g., ICE, CIHT)
  • Familiarity with GIS and traffic simulation software

Nice to Have

  • Experience working within local authorities or public sector transport teams
  • Knowledge of sustainable transport policies and active travel initiatives
