Cheshire East Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Accountancy Technician (Grade 8) to support the delivery of high-quality financial services. The successful candidate will provide technical financial support, assist in budget monitoring and financial reporting, and ensure compliance with statutory and corporate financial regulations.

This is a key role within the finance team, supporting service managers and senior finance officers in delivering robust financial management and control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide financial and technical support to budget holders and service managers.
  • Assist in the preparation, monitoring, and control of revenue and capital budgets.
  • Produce accurate and timely financial reports, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Support the year-end accounts process and statutory financial returns.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Contribute to budget setting processes and medium-term financial planning.
  • Reconcile financial data and maintain accurate accounting records.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing service improvements and efficiencies.
  • Support internal and external audit processes.
  • Provide guidance and advice on financial systems and processes.
  • Supervise or support junior finance staff where required.
Person SpecificationEssential (Must Have)
  • AAT qualified (Level 4) or equivalent accountancy qualification, or significant relevant experience.
  • Proven experience working in a finance or accountancy environment.
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting, financial monitoring, and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting budget holders and non-finance managers.
  • Good understanding of financial regulations and accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data.
  • Proficient in financial systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working within a public sector or local authority environment (or similar regulated environment).
Desirable (Nice to Have)
  • Part-qualified CCAB (CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, ACA) qualification.
  • Experience working within local government finance.
  • Knowledge of local authority accounting requirements and statutory returns.
  • Experience with integrated finance systems (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Agresso, or similar).
  • Experience supporting budget setting and medium-term financial strategies.
