We are recruiting a Bridge Inspector to support the Council's Highways, Transport & Planning Team. This is a key role, ideal for someone reliable, proactive, and confident working across highway structures to ensure safety, compliance, and quality standards.

About the Role

As a Bridge Inspector, you'll conduct inspections on highway structures across West Sussex, identifying defects and contributing to the development and maintenance of safe and sustainable transport infrastructure.

What you'll be doing:

  • Conduct inspections on bridges and other highway structures.
  • Identify and record structural defects accurately.
  • Support the Highways, Transport & Planning Team in delivering services efficiently.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of sustainable projects.
  • Contribute to the development of sustainable communities within West Sussex.
  • Maintain a high standard of work and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Use digital tools (iPad) to record and download inspection data.
  • Travel across West Sussex in all weather conditions, using PPE as required.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone practical, organised, and able to work independently across multiple sites. You'll ideally have:

  • Experience in bridge inspections and ability to identify structural defects.
  • Familiarity with CS450 software (desirable).
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements when working near live highways.
  • Understanding of bridge behaviour and structural materials.
  • Proficient in using iPads or similar devices for recording inspection data.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Eligible to work in the UK and willing to sign Confidentiality Agreement, Criminal Convictions Declaration, and Induction Statement.
