The Nursing support Worker will work closely with the Registered Nurse supporting and caring for patients following a stroke.
A key aim of the role will be to support the patient to achieve optimum independence by assisting in the provision and monitoring of rehabilitation services, implementing an agreed individualised plan of care as determined by the team.
The post holder is expected to always treat individuals with dignity and respect, recognising their wishes and beliefs empowering the patient to have choice and control of their care.
The post-holder will practise in accordance with Health Board standards and statutory requirements and operate within the boundaries of the role and assessed competencies.

The post holder must communicate effectively at all times and in conjunction with other team members contributing to and maintaining the team/ward philosophy.
Main duties of the job
- Provide appropriate routine information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, using appropriate communication techniques to overcome any barriers to understanding and providing support using empathy and tact during distressing or emotional events. This may include interacting with patients/families who have additional needs, for example learning disabilities or language/communication barriers.
- Respond appropriately to routine queries, take phone messages and pass on written and verbal information to patients and staff in a timely manner.
- Promote health education specific to the clinical area and in line with national and local policies.
- Follow all legislation and organisational policies and procedures, comment on procedures for own area of activity, and suggest improvements which will contribute to the efficient running of the service supporting better patient experience.
- Contribute to research, audits, quality improvement initiatives and clinical trials programmes as required carried out within the area of work.
- Maintain accurate records in both written and electronic formats, adhering to data governance, confidentiality, and cybersecurity policies.
- The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
- Level 3 qualification in a health care related subject or equivalent experience and can evidence work-based competency demonstrating theoretical knowledge, and the ability to undertake clinical care duties relevant for the role which is gained through experience and work-based training/short courses.
- Knowledge of the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales and All Wales Delegation Guidelines (HEIW).
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures within a healthcare setting for example the principles of Safeguarding adults/children to keep patients within their care safe, and confidentiality for example General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
Experience
- Experience of working within a relevant health or social care environment, providing direct patient care.
- Experience of working with patient groups relevant to area of practice.
- Experience of working within the NHS.
Language Skills
- Welsh Speaker (Level 1).
