An opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Haematologist to join the team at Hywel Dda UHB. We are offering a dynamic and rewarding role located in a beautiful part of Wales. We are looking for a highly committed and motivated individual to join our Haematology team who will be able to bring some subspecialisation into the wider team. The health board operates over four sites in west Wales. This post will be covering Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth while also supporting the wider team.

Our team of 7 consultants provide a comprehensive haematology service in the four hospitals in an area of outstanding beauty. This post will provide support for a wide range of patient groups. This hospital is our smallest of the four and the team are spread between the four sites. Support for the post includes Specialty Doctor, Haematology CNS team and Specialist Haematology pharmacists. Our staff are at the heart of the quality of our service and are looking to add to our numbers. We are looking for someone to bring additional expertise and a passion to provide excellence.

Main duties of the job

  • Clinical: The appointee should be able to demonstrate experience in the management of all Haematological conditions. The successful candidate will be able to develop a subspecialty across the health board and work alongside the other consultants to contribute to subspecialisation teams.
  • Inpatients: The appointee will be expected to consult on all inpatients with the local medical team looking after them. Additional teaching on management of haematology patients will be essential. Liaising with the Acute Oncology Service which covers haematology in-patients.
  • Outpatients: The appointee will be expected to participate in 3-4 clinics per week. Consideration for other subspecialist workload could be considered, depending on applicant's experience to date. There is an increasing number of patients returning from the tertiary centres following treatments that return home between treatment cycles that need additional input from the local haematology team. Phone clinics are encouraged given the rural area and inability to travel for our patients.
  • Laboratory: The appointee will be expected to help out with advice and input on blood films and reporting bone marrow reports. There is a weekly health board wide MDT and opportunities to join other MDTs from all Wales MDTs (Lymphoma, Myeloma, Myeloid).

Job responsibilities

The appointee is required to be GMC registered on the specialist register or be expected to obtain CCT within 6 months. The appointee will contribute to all aspects of the general haematology and haemato-oncology work including participation in departmental meetings and on-call rota. 10 Sessions with 20% non-clinical work (SPA) per week within job plan. Clinics in other hospital sites may be required (virtual clinics are an option). The appointee must be someone who can help develop our rural service to ensure excellent patient care.
