Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking three enthusiastic Emergency Medicine Consultants to join our expanding Emergency Medicine teams across Withybush Hospital (Haverfordwest) and Glangwili Hospital (Carmarthen). These posts offer a rare opportunity to combine high-impact clinical leadership, portfolio working, and an outstanding quality of life in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. If you are looking to make a difference, rather than simply fill a rota gap, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job:

  • The posts will be split across Withybush and Glangwili, with flexibility in job planning to reflect individual skills, interests and career aspirations.
  • At Glangwili Hospital, we are particularly keen to attract: Consultants with an interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or those wishing to develop paediatrics as a specialist or focused area of practice.

Across both sites, there is genuine scope to shape your role around what you bring – whether that’s:

  • Paediatrics
  • Trauma
  • Major incident planning
  • Education, simulation or training
  • Quality improvement, transformation or flow
  • Pre-hospital or coastal medicine
  • Leadership, service development or system working

This is not a one-size-fits-all job plan – we actively encourage portfolio careers.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services. We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals, Tregaron Hospital, Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals

  • 47 general practices (six managed by the health board), dental practices (including four orthodontic), 97 community pharmacies, 43 general ophthalmic practices and eight ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Job description:

Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking Emergency Medicine Consultants to join our teams at Withybush General Hospital and Glangwili General Hospital. We serve a population of approximately 385,000 people across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. This is Emergency Medicine in its truest sense: high acuity decision-making, clinical autonomy, strong consultant influence and meaningful impact on local communities.

For newly appointed CCT doctors, we support transition into independent consultant practice through a strong induction, named consultant support and opportunities to develop a portfolio interest.

The Roles:

These are substantive consultant posts, with job plans split across Withybush and Glangwili, offering flexibility to align roles with individual skills, interests and career goals. We are particularly keen to attract consultants with an interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, or those wishing to develop paediatrics as a specialist or portfolio area. There are also opportunities in education and simulation, service improvement, clinical leadership and specialist interests such as trauma or pre-hospital care, alongside regional and system level working.

Emergency Medicine in Hywel Dda:

Our Emergency Departments serve diverse urban, rural and remote populations, including areas with significant seasonal tourism pressures and an ageing population with complex needs. Long travel distances mean senior decision-making genuinely matters, creating a challenging but professionally rewarding environment where consultant presence has a real impact on patient care.

Why Hywel Dda?

We prioritise supportive, stable consultant teams, with a strong emphasis on kindness, collaboration and pragmatism. There are genuine opportunities to develop clinical, educational and leadership roles, alongside a clear commitment to work-life balance and wellbeing. Welsh speaking ability is welcomed but not essential. As a University Health Board, Hywel Dda also benefits from strong academic links and opportunities for teaching and professional development.

Life in West Wales:

West Wales offers a compelling lifestyle advantage, with stunning coastline, beaches, national parks and excellent outdoor opportunities. Housing is more affordable, commutes are short and communities are strong, with good schools. Many consultants choose Hywel Dda as a long-term career and lifestyle option, not a stepping stone.

Who Should Apply:

We welcome applications from substantive Emergency Medicine Consultants, CESR (equivalence) candidates and senior doctors approaching consultant level readiness, who value teamwork and want to shape services rather than simply maintain rotas.

Informal Enquiries:

Recruitment to West Wales works best through conversation. If you are remotely interested, we strongly encourage an informal discussion or visit. Vicky Hughes Clinical Lead for Emergency Medicine Email: Vicki.Hughes@wales.nhs.uk
