Clinical Psychologist – Learning Disabilities

What we are expecting from you:

  • To provide specialist assessments to individuals and their families or carers
  • To formulate and plan interventions for individuals and the network around them
  • To have knowledge and skills in working with a wide range of mental health issues

Main duties of the job

To undertake protocol based psychological assessments of clients, raising psychological and psychometric tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client\’s care.

To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a client\’s problems, in both community, in-patient and residential settings.

To assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups.

To work with other staff to assess clients in community, residential and in-patient settings, and to review their care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews.

To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place.

To attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Job responsibilities

The post requires a good honours degree in psychology to support and enhance the professional psychological care of clients within the service, providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions, working independently according to a plan and within the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures.

To assist in clinically related administration, conducting of audits, collection of statistics, development of audit and/or other projects and teaching.

In common with all clinical psychologists, to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines.

To assist in the design and implementation of service development projects within the service as required.

Utilise degree research skills to assist and guide service development and modernisation.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist
  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including psychopathology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Good working knowledge and application of Psychometrics and cognitive assessments, appropriate administration and limitations
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of psychology across the developmental lifespan and experience of working in core specialties of adult mental health, child and adolescent, older adults and learning disabilities demonstrating knowledge of cognition, behavioural psychology and other models and approaches
  • Knowledge of models of psychology including cognition, behavioural psychology and systemic approaches
  • Doctoral knowledge of research
  • Training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology

Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment incorporating psychometrics and cognitive assessment
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course, presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
  • Experience of teaching, training and supervision
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts
  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities

  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
