Take the next step in your consultant career by joining our established Trauma & Orthopaedic team at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen, contributing to specialist foot and ankle care and the wider trauma service across South West Wales. We are seeking a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle Surgery to support the delivery and continued development of services across Hywel Dda University Health Board. The successful candidate will join a supportive department providing both elective and emergency care, with opportunities to develop specialist foot and ankle services while contributing to a busy trauma unit. We are looking for a clinician committed to high-quality patient care, service development and multidisciplinary working. You will join a department that values professional development, collaboration and achieving the best possible outcomes for patients. Glangwili General Hospital is a designated Trauma Unit within the Welsh Major Trauma Network, working closely with the Major Trauma Centre at University Hospital Wales, Cardiff. The role offers opportunities to work across the region and contribute to the development of specialist services and care pathways throughout South West Wales.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering a comprehensive elective and trauma foot and ankle service across Hywel Dda University Health Board.
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of specialist foot and ankle pathways and supporting the wider South West Wales Foot and Ankle Network.
  • Sharing responsibility for the acute management of trauma patients through participation in the consultant on-call rota.
  • Working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, including physiotherapists, podiatrists, specialist nurses, radiologists, microbiologists and orthogeriatric teams to provide high-quality patient-centred care.
  • Participating in Health Board and regional multidisciplinary team meetings, including those supporting diabetic foot care and complex foot and ankle pathology.
  • Supporting the development of integrated pathways across hospital and community settings to improve patient experience and outcomes.
  • Contributing to teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary workforce.
  • Participating in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development activities to ensure delivery of safe, effective and sustainable services.

The team establishment consists of 14 Consultants, 11 middle grade doctors, 2 Higher Surgical Trainees, 14 CT level doctors, 2 F2’s along with 3.0 wte Trauma Coordinators and a Physician’s Associate.
