Candidates who currently hold or have previously held SC are particularly encouraged to apply.
This is not a traditional stress analysis position focused purely on running FEA to established procedures. The engineering team is looking for someone who enjoys solving structural problems from first principles, identifying the important features of a problem, defining the appropriate analysis methodology and understanding the limitations of different analytical techniques. The successful engineer will have genuine technical ownership and use a combination of structural analysis, FEA and engineering judgement to support and influence design decisions.
The initial programme sits within the marine defence environment, although applications are welcomed from engineers across defence, aerospace, marine and other highly regulated engineering sectors.
- Undertake structural analysis and FEA across complex defence engineering programmes
- Approach new structural problems from first principles and determine the appropriate analysis methodology
- Develop, build and interrogate finite element models
- Perform structural assessments as required by the programme
- Apply sound engineering judgement when defining assumptions, loads, boundary conditions and modelling approaches
- Understand and communicate the limitations of different analytical and numerical techniques
- Validate FEA results through hand calculations, engineering fundamentals and alternative analytical methods
- Interpret analysis results and translate findings into meaningful engineering recommendations
- Work closely with design engineers to influence structural design decisions
- Produce clear technical documentation, calculations and analysis reports
- Support technical reviews and communicate analysis methodologies and conclusions to engineering stakeholders
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering or a related discipline
Professional experience in structural analysis, stress analysis or FEA
Strong foundation in structural mechanics and fundamental engineering principles
Ability to demonstrate experience approaching engineering problems from first principles
Experience using FEA software within a professional engineering environment
Experience with FEMAP, NASTRAN or comparable structural analysis tools would be advantageous
Ability to understand not only how an analysis is performed, but why a particular methodology is appropriate
Ability to recognise the assumptions and limitations associated with different analytical techniques
Comfortable working on technically varied problems where an established analysis process may not already exist
Strong technical communication and report writing capability
Experience within defence, aerospace, marine or another highly regulated engineering environment would be advantageous
The position will ultimately be based in Gosport, Hampshire. To support the successful candidate with relocation and onboarding, accommodation will be fully provided during the initial onboarding period in Dorking and subsequently in Gosport, together with a £35 per day subsistence allowance.
The organisation is interested in engineers who see the opportunity beyond the initial programme and want to develop within a consultancy offering exposure to a broad range of technically challenging engineering work.
- Permanent opportunity supporting confidential UK defence programmes
- Genuine technical ownership rather than process driven analysis
- Opportunity to solve varied structural engineering problems from first principles
- Exposure to complex marine defence and wider advanced engineering programmes
- Work alongside an experienced and highly regarded engineering team
- Fully provided accommodation to support relocation and onboarding
- £35 per day subsistence allowance during the supported period
- Longer term opportunities across a diverse portfolio of engineering projects
