Design is one of the most important things we do at Hypervolt — and this is one of the most important roles in the company. You will report directly to the CEO and own the physical design of our products end to end, from the blank page to the unit on the wall. You'll work closely with the VP of Hardware and the wider hardware team, and partner with the VP of Manufacturing Engineering and our contract manufacturing partners, to take beautiful design all the way through to high-quality, on-time delivery.
What You'll Do
- Own the Product, End to End: Lead industrial design across our hardware family — form, surfacing, proportion, and detail. You own it from first sketch to final production part. The object is the brand, and it's yours.
- Embrace a Deep Design Ethos: We love great design, and we have from day one. We believe there's always room to improve and aim to become one of the best design-focused companies in the world — admiring pioneers like Apple, Braun, and Dieter Rams, whose work inspires us to live the mantra: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."
- Define the Design Language & CMF: Establish and evolve a coherent design language and colour, material, and finish system that scales beautifully across the entire product range.
- Collaborate Across Hardware & Manufacturing: Work hand-in-hand with the VP of Hardware and the hardware team (our detailed mechanical work lives in SolidWorks), and partner closely with the VP of Manufacturing Engineering and our contract manufacturing partners to protect design intent through tooling, mass production, and delivery.
- Design for Manufacture: Take products from concept through to production-intent design, designing within real constraints — and never losing the vision in the process.
- Prototype & Iterate: Move fast from sketches and 3D-printed models to high-fidelity appearance models and renders, putting things in people's hands and refining relentlessly.
- Design for the Real World: Create products that are flawless in a studio and bulletproof outdoors — engineering beauty into IP-rated, all-weather enclosures built to last for years.
- Own the Whole Object Experience: The product, the packaging, the unboxing, the install — every physical touchpoint a customer has should feel considered and premium.
- Drive Quality Through to Delivery: Champion craft and consistency, holding the line on quality from the first concept review all the way to the line in the factory.
Projects You'll Work On
- Home Chargers: Our flagship product line — the beautifully designed British hardware that put us on the map, and the next generations of it.
- Commercial & Destination Charging: Bringing the same design standard to hardware built for public, workplace, and commercial environments.
- Accessories & System Design: Mounts, cable management, holsters, and the family of objects that surround the core product.
- CMF & Materials: Building and curating the colour, material, and finish library that defines how every Hypervolt product looks and feels.
- Packaging & Unboxing: Designing the first physical moment a customer has with the brand, end to end.
What We're Looking For
- Deep Experience in Premium Consumer Hardware: A proven track record of designing and shipping highly polished physical products in premium consumer hardware. This is a firm requirement — we are looking for someone who has set the bar in this space.
- A Strong Sense of Ownership: You take complete ownership of your work and its outcomes. You treat the product as your own and drive it from concept to delivery without needing to be chased.
- A Portfolio That Speaks for Itself: Shipped products that demonstrate genuine taste, restraint, and obsessive attention to detail.
- Mastery of the Toolset: Fluency in surfacing and rendering tools — e.g. Rhino, Alias, Fusion 360, or SolidWorks for surfacing, and KeyShot (or equivalent) for visualisation.
- CMF & Manufacturing Fluency: Deep feel for materials and a strong grasp of design for manufacture — injection moulding, die casting, finishing processes — and the judgement to design within real constraints.
- Passion for Simplicity & Aesthetics: You believe simplicity is beautiful and seek to reduce complexity while delighting people with clean, modern, timeless design.
- Startup Background: Comfort operating with less structure than a large corporate environment, taking ownership and using initiative.
- Fast-Growing Environment: Ability to thrive in a rapidly scaling, fast-paced company, managing multiple priorities and quick turnarounds.
- Level of English: At least conversational proficiency in English is required, as the company operates primarily in English. Ideally, C1 or above.
- Green Energy Enthusiasm: Bonus points if you're passionate about electric cars, the energy transition, or sustainability initiatives.
Benefits
- Competitive Salary & Generous Stock Options: Be rewarded for helping us grow and succeed.
- Hybrid Working Policy: Time in our prime London offices with flexibility to work from home otherwise.
- End-to-End Ownership: A rare chance to own the physical design of a product line that ships at scale and genuinely cares about craft — reporting directly to the CEO.
